www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 17, 2006 - 7 Tip a Cop for Halton Food for Thought The annual Tip a Cop event returns Wednesday, Nov. 29 as members of the Halton Regional Police serve the dining patrons at Kelsey's Restaurant located at 401 Hays Blvd., in Oakville. The event supports Halton Food for Thought as all tips given to the officers, are donated to the organization to aid in the breakfast and snack programs in Oakville schools. Studies have shown that students who are arriving to school hungry have problems concentrating, display behavioral problems, are less alert and are often lethargic. Fifty per cent of all food bank users in Canada are children. Although poverty is not the only reason that children arrive at school hungry. Poor eating habits are the result of many reasons. During the morning rush to school, breakfast can easily be overlooked as well as the time it takes to pack a healthy lunch. One in 10 children arrive at school without any breakfast, snack or lunch to get them through an entire school day. Food For Thought provides children with a safe environment to feel a sense of belonging. This increases a child's self-confidence, behavior as well as academic performances. It is the belief of Food for Thought that no child should have to wonder where their next meal will come from, and that no child in the community should go hungry. There are 11 operating programs in Oakville's 48 schools. Food for Thought's goal is to ensure that every school in Oakville operates a Student Nutrition Program.
