8- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 11, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Advance voting wrapped up Voter turnout at municipal elections is usually around 30 per cent. In Oakville, there's no indication from advance voting turnout that turnout will be higher this time around. According to Town Clerk Cathie Best, there was a slightly higher voter turnout -- nearly 700 more voters -- in the advance voting this year compared to 2003. However, there were also more advance voting dates and a higher electoral population base now compared to 2003. "I can't suggest that it indicates an increased turnout can be expected. I continue to be hopeful that electors will come out on the 13th," said Best. In 2003, there were three days of Advance Voting at five locations. In 2006, there were 11 days of Advance Voting at Town Hall, two including advance voting at three other locations. Set to swallow results By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF KEEPING IN TOUCH 905-849-5669 e-mail: fred.oliver@hotmail.com Remembrance Every November 11th, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who served their country during wartime and in the cause of peace. More than 1,500,000 Canadians served overseasin the First World War (1914-18), the Second World War (1939-45), and the Korean War (1950-53). More than 100,000 died. We honour their sacrifice and the sacrifices of our soldiers today, who serve so we may live in peace. A Day of Slamming back a few cold ones could change everything in the final stretch of Oakville's mayoral race. Partisan boozing has so far favoured incumbent Ann Mulvale, but the results are tight and the fate of the mayoral candidates is still very much in the hands of beer drinkers. That's the name of the game at Oakville's Trafalgar Brewing Company, where four beers have been re-labeled with the faces of the leading mayoral candidates. It's the Vote with Your Throat election, and each beer consumed counts as a vote. The most recent results posted yesterday afternoon show Mulv-Ale in the lead at 33 per cent of the beer vote, with The Wright Stuff close behind at 27 per cent. Rob Burton's True Burton Ale is sitting at 21 and (Chris) Stoate's Grand Lager is close behind at 19 per cent. "What's surprising is how close they are," said brewery president Mike Arnold. "There's no clear winner. Between the Mulv-Ale at 33 per cent and Stoate's Grand Lager at 19, that's not a huge spread. Really, when you get down to it, between the four of them, there's not a whole lot of difference." Arnold feels that's indicative not just of the taste of the four beers, but of voters' views heading into Monday's election. "They're voting with their heart first and then with their throat second," he said. "I think this is reflecting that people are not too sure." As the brewery found during its first Vote with Your Throat campaign in the last federal election, its beer poll results were nearly dead on with the `real' national results. "I would be very surprised if that wasn't the case with the municipal," said Arnold. "If the order in which the candidates win is close to what we predict, then I'd be very happy." The four beers the fifth mayoral candidate Daniela Giecewicz wasn't included in the Vote with Your Throat election because the brewery was unable to contact her not only bear the faces of each candidate floating in a pint of beer, but the beer's characteristics are very close to the candidates themselves. Mulv-Ale is a long-standing brew and has been the brewery's top beer for years, touted as having "proven leadership," Arnold says, referring to Mulvale's 18-year stint See Suds page 9 Re-Elect ED VIANA TRUSTEE HALTON CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD Dedication, Commitment, Reliable & Knowledgeable Ed stands for: · Halton Regional Campus · Refurbishing or REBUILD St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School · 4th New Secondary School in Oakville · New Elementary School in Oakville · Open door policy to parents, school councils, students, teachers - staff Let Ed's "26 years of healthy experience" continue working with Catholic " taxpayers in Oakville.
