Appleby Line Maple Grove raises roof with hymnathon On Saturday, Nov. 18, Maple Grove United Church members and guests will be singing 250 hymns to raise money for a major renovation. The renovation will allow people in wheelchairs full accessibility to the building with an elevator. The building, which is used for many community activities as well as a church, is 50 years old and there is no way for people in wheelchairs to get into the sanctuary which has a set of stairs above street level. "Maple Grove United Church is the only neighbourhood facility available at a reasonable cost," says Bob Mitchell, the Hymnathon organizer who has attended the church for 50 years. "Cub scouts, a pilates group, dog training, basketball games, weddings and meetings all take place here, so this building serves the community much more than as a place of worship. It provides affordable recreation." Mitchell explains that an elevator is a key component of the church's renovation plans, as well as raising the eaves of the roof to accommodate a balcony at the back of the sanctuary. The day will start at 9:30 a.m. with coffee, refreshments and hymns. There will be Christmas hymns in the morning and afternoon, as well as two children's hymn times. Soloists will be featured every hour. The final hymn will be sung at 5 p.m. This is the second Hymnathon at Maple Grove United Church. The first one took place 25 years ago and was spearheaded by Mitchell. Around $18,000 was raised, which paid for an organ for the church, which will be providing the music for this hymnathon. Mitchell says the goal this time is $30,000. He has raised $1,600 so far and proudly wears his blue "Raise the Roof" button. For information visit www.maplegroveunitedchurch.org.
