Marlatt-Mason VICTORIA ROBERTS / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER CHECKING IT OUT: Halton Regional Chief of Police, Gary Crowell with Oakville Fire Chief Richard Boyes and one of a trio of thermal imaging camera that detects heat instead of light, that the fire department has donated to the local police service. Cops get gift from fire service Oakville Fire Chief Richard Boyes recently handed over to Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell three thermal imagers -- cameras that detect heat instead of light. Earlier this year, the Oakville Fire Department used a Provincial grant to purchase new thermal imagers to ensure that all frontline fire trucks were outfitted with this infrared technology. These new imagers are more compact and more easily stored on fire department apparatuses. "The Oakville Fire Department and Halton Regional Police Services have a very good working relationship and it was a natural choice to offer them the cameras we no longer needed," said Boyes. Crowell thanked Boyes and said police will use the imagers in areas such as the Drug and Morality Bureau, Regional Traffic Unit and the Tactical Rescue Unit. Police personnel will be trained to use the imagers at the Oakville Fire Department's Training Campus. The thermal imagers were used by Oakville firefighters to see through thick smoke in order to locate victims and hard-to-find wall fires and are still considered to be state-of-the-art technology.
