www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 3, 2006 - 27 Regular exercise helps war veteran stay young at heart member Donald Manchester, grandfather of six and aged 82, is a walking and talking example of the benefits of life-long exercise. A World War II veteran, Manchester was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy where he was part of a mid-ocean convoy between St. John's Newfoundland and Londonderry, England. Proud of his part to escort merchant ships safely, Manchester commented, "We didn't lose any." Manchester was made a sublieutenant hours before the war ended and then went on to university where he graduated with an arts degree one of the only degree choices at that time. Y He worked in his father's paper box business until it was sold and then was involved in the pioneering of canned soft drinks in Canada in the 1950s. Sale of the soft drink operation was followed by a 35-year career in the Toronto real estate business and retirement in 1991. Manchester has exercised for many years, and has been a member of the YMCA of Oakville for three years. He has suffered a heart attack and two hip replacements, and has been able to recover his strength and maintain his fitness and mobility. Wellness staff member, Bill Joyce, designed Manchester's exercise program and has been impressed by his dedication. "Donald is so committed to coming in here and doing his program and staying young." Manchester visits the Y two or three times each week and uses two different programs so that he "won't get bored." Donald Manchester His exercises focus on core strength so that he can maintain the strength in his torso and hips. Of the Y, Manchester said, "The Y is beautiful. It's one of the best facilities that I've been in and I think the folks here are just great. They are most friendly and willing to help. I enjoy talking to people so I chat as I come in and as I leave." Thanks for choosing the YMCA of Oakville, Donald Manchester, and for making your health a life priority!
