www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 29, 2006 - 7 Toy's flashing red light leads to early morning scare at Post Office A gift mailed from a Toronto grandmother to her grandchild in Oakville inadvertently led to the cordoning off of the Oakville Post Office early Tuesday morning -- where the bomb squad almost blew up the package after a flashing red light was seen inside. It was in the very early morning Tuesday that Halton police were called by staff at Canada Post's Oakville sorting centre at 193 Church St. after an employee observed the parcel with a flashing red light within. Officers responded, evacuated the building and closed off nearby streets. The Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was called in to deal with the suspicious package, along with Halton EMS Tactical Paramedics, the Oakville Fire Department and Canada Post Corporate Security. As EDU was preparing to render the package safe -- usually done by detonating it -- police and Canada Post identified the parcel's sender. The Toronto woman was contacted and it was confirmed that the contents of the parcel were not hazardous and posed no safety concern. That's when the Post Office building and area streets were reopened at 7 a.m. The flashing red light was from a gift a grandmother was sending to her grandchild. In the wake of the incident, a police officer personally delivered the gift -- intact and undamaged -- to the child. Canada Post delivers 37 million pieces of mail to over 13 million addresses in Canada each working day. Its employees are watchful for dangerous or hazardous goods in the mail and have been trained in the identification and handling of suspicious items.
