Sports-Arts-Academics Hamilton-Goodale in basketball hall of fame Carol Hamilton-Goodale's basketball achievements will be recognized tonight in Toronto as she is posthumously inducted into the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame. Hamilton-Goodale, who succumbed to cervical cancer in March of 2004, enjoyed a stellar career on the hardcourt. She led her Sudbury Secondary School team to provincial championships in 1980 and 1981, earning the nickname "Ice Woman" for her clutch performances, and earned a full scholarship to NCAA Big Ten Conferencepowerhouse Ohio State. At Ohio State, she started as a freshman and won the Student/Athlete Award, while the Buckeyes were Big Ten Conference cochampions in both her years there. Hamilton-Goodale then attended Laurentian University, earning most valuable player honours in 1984-85 while helping Laurentian win silver at the Canadian championships. She later went on to play for the Canadian national team for 12 years, played overseas and was drafted by the WNBA's Houston Comets. Though Hamilton-Goodale will be inducted into the hall of fame as a player, she also contributed many things to the sport as a coach and builder. She was a certified coach, a motivational speaker for FAME (Female Athletes Motivating Excellence) and, along with husband Bill Goodale, co-founded Home Court Basketball, a non-profit club program based out of Oakville. Home Court Basketball hosts instructional day camps, leagues, special events, coaching certification clinics and school practices, also offering instruction for teams and individuals. Its goals include instilling positive attitudes such as perseverance and hard work, facilitating appreciation of the sport and participation in it, and promoting sportsmanship and healthy, friendly competition. Two other players, two builders and a coach are also being inducted into the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame this evening. The Hall of Fame Gala Dinner will be held at the Holiday Inn Airport East Hotel.
