www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 13, 2006 - 13 Cone confusion lengthened route Continued from page 6 At approximately 8:15 a.m., Ron Shantz, KSM's Executive Director, welcomed the crowd and thanked sponsors, volunteers and all who were there for being a part of this special inaugural event. Mayor Ann Mulvale officially opened the race at 8:20 a.m. with kind words of encouragement and enthusiasm. Event Director, Caroline Glasbey, thanked the runners prior to the 5K race, and Todd Milligan, Race Director, started the countdown and activated the siren for the race to begin. A slight diversion occurred along the route, due to extra cones that had been placed just before the race start and after the route had been checked four times. The cones were to divert traffic, but unfortunately they caused some confusion and the runners took a slight detour of approximately 0.4K. Hence, the race was timed for 5.4K. Danny Francis, 17, finished first in 18 minutes, just 40 seconds ahead of Peter von Euw's 18:40 time. Matt McLaughlin came third at 19:18. Fastest female, with a gun time of 21:31, was 15-year old Julia Friesen, tightly followed by Alison Higgins, just two sec- BARRIE ERSKINE / BEAVER REFLECTION: Ron Shantz of Kerr Street Ministries shelters Mayor Ann Mulvale from the rain at the start of the race. onds behind. Third was Mary St. James at 22:06. The race was chip-timed. The crowd cheered as streams of runners poured through the finishing line. Less than an hour from the start, when the last participant crossed the line, the first of many 5KSM Run for Hope races was complete. An additional 100 runners and walkers lined up for the 1K walk/run at 9:30 a.m., led by a volunteering Village Constable Wendy Clayton of Bronte, who ran the distance in her uniform. Awards were presented for the fastest male/female, the Masters male/female and first, second and third placers in 11 age groups, from 14 and under to 60 plus, in increments of five years. This event could not have taken place without the sponsorship and support of the many companies and individuals who provided funds or services to cover all pre-race and race costs. The three major sponsors were MacDougall, MacDougall & MacTier Inc., Rand Worldwide and Good Books. KSM thanks all the sponsors, supporters and the volunteers, led by Volunteer Director, Donna Wray, for making this inaugural event successful. They look forward to this year's 5KSM Run for Hope being the first of many years to come. · Permanent Self-Cleaning Filter with Bag Option · All-Steel Canister · Whisper-quiet operation FEATU RES: for over 30 years!
