www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 25, 2006 - 13 Expert training for recreational and professional students at The Oakville School of Dance When considering enrolling your child in ballet training, why settle for anything less than Oakville's best; The Oakville School of Dance (OSD). Oakville's only Classical ballet school is more than 40 years old and has a proven track record of producing superbly trained, excellent dancers, many of which have pursued careers in major ballet companies worldwide. You can be assured that at OSD the instructor is a fully qualified ballet teacher with the credentials, expertise and experience necessary to provide a fun, positive, supportive experience leading to proven, successful training. Elizabeth Paterson, a children's and major examiner with the Royal Academy of Dance for more than 30 years, founded the Oakville School of Dance in 1960. After offering her expertise for many years, Elizabeth retired and handed the reins to her daughter, Amanda Paterson-Anderson. Amanda, a graduate of the National Ballet School has raised the standards even higher for her students. In fact, this year all dancers from the graduating class have been offered professional contracts and placements in the dance world. Past graduates are now dancing in companies in the U.K., the United States and across Canada. "Over the past 46 years the OSD has grown from a local dance school to an internationally renowned classical ballet school," says Anderson. "The OSD provides exceptional ballet training for the beginners to professional students throughout Southern Ontario. Students have come from countries as far away as Brazil, Japan and Mexico to train within the Professional Division to prepare for their new career in ballet. Ballet classes offers children from age three, the opportunity to grow in self-confidence, coordination, flexibility, strength, musicality, artistry and creativity." Emphasis on the younger classes concentrates on the pleasure of movement and musicality with the development of technique evolving through the levels. "Children are exposed to Character Dance, the study of folk steps and dances from selected countries," says Anderson. "This provides insight into the colourful history of music, dance and national costumes of countries such as Poland, Russia, and Hungary." "We are a performance oriented school performing with the Oakville Ballet Company on productions such as our annual "Nutcracker" in early December and A Spring Evening of Dance in late May," says Anderson. This give the students a chance to learn and OSD offers classes in ballet, modern, jazz and Spanish.
