Trooper to spread word on drinking and driving After weeks of deliberation, the Mayor‘s Special Committee Against Impaired Driving has choâ€" sen TROOPER as the winning entry in its Name The Elephant Contest. The winning name was submitâ€" ted by Stephanie Koyanagi, an eightâ€"yearâ€"old Grade 4 student at Sheridan Public School. According to Koyanagi, she suggested the name Trooper because â€" "He is dedicated to stopping drinking and driving. He is a real Trooper.": At an award ceremony held today at Sheridan Public School‘s Christmas assembly, Mayor Ann Mulvale preâ€" sented Stephanie with a cheque for $100, along with a little plush verâ€" sion of Trooper of her very own. "The committee was absolutely delighted with the response it received," said Mayor Mulvale, commenting on the 1,006 entries that poured into Town Hall. "It was difficult to choose a winning name because there were so many intelliâ€" gent and creative suggestions," said the Mayor, "We were all impressed by the thought and creativity that went into the entries we received. I am very pleased to know that eleâ€" mentary school students across Oakville have been thinking about the antiâ€"drinking and driving mesâ€" sage and what it really means to drive dry. More important is the dialogue on drinking and driving that this contest opened up between students and their parents. My hope now is that Trooper will continue to remind people, young and old, that â€" don‘t drink and drive â€" is a mesâ€" sage that must never be forgotten," she added. On the contest entries, which were circulated to all elementary schools in Oakville, students were asked to help the Mayor‘s Special Committee Against Impaired Driving find a name for its new plush elephant mascot. An elephant was chosen by the committee because of its very important qualiâ€" ty... an elephant never forgets, just as the â€" don‘t drink and drive â€" message should never be forgotten. Students were asked to think of a fitting name for the elephant, bearing in mind exactly what the elephant represents. They were also asked to provide a few words on why they chose the name they did. Trooper, the elephant, will now become a key part of future public education activities organized by the Committee.
