"When the guests arrived, I put their gifts in a Santa sack, and after dinner, brought out the sack and told my husband this was his donaâ€" tion to the Christmas Bureau from his friends, says Beth. "The thing that was so wonderful was the love and happiness among the guests because they had done this. It was a good feeling." More than 1,000 families in Oakville will benefit from people like the Gaunts this Christmas. "We‘ve had 1,037 applications for help, and they‘re still coming in," says Betty Zelinsky, Family Services Director for the Oakville Salvation Army. "To meet the needs of the community, we‘re going to need in excess of $100,000. To date, we‘ve received $71,000. Families who receive assistance from the Salvation Army this Christmas will receive gift certifiâ€" cates for a grocery store of their choice and $50 for toys for each child in the family. All the donated toys are setâ€"up in a toy depot, so that parents can come and choose toys for their own kids. The Salvation Army was foundâ€" ed in 1865 in south London, England, by William Booth, who believed "every person should have food, shelter, and clothing." This original mandate still holds true today as the Army provides free dignities of life, as well as, spiritual healing. In 1882, the Salvation Army came to Canada and in 1952, Oakville began its own corps. The Salvation Army is a denomâ€" ination, just like Anglican, or Presbyterian, but what sets it apart from these and others is its quasiâ€" military setâ€"up. There is an officer, instead of a minister; songsters in place of the choir; the church itself is referred to as a corps; and the head of the corps is the divisional commander. With Christmas just around the corner, the Salvation Army is in the midst of its Christmas fundâ€"raising campaign which, according to Zelinsky, is needed for more famiâ€" lies than last year. "We don‘t see a drastic reduction in the number of people in need," she says. "We‘re still seeing people losing jobs and people who get jobs find they‘re only temporary." Throughout the year, the Family Services Division of the Army proâ€" vides food, clothing, support counâ€" selling, and an emergency shelter program for people in need. All of the donations come from the comâ€" munity, service groups, and local organizations. In addition to these fundamental services, the Oakville Corps also offers a number of programs for anybody in the community. These include a lady‘s group which is involved in fundâ€"raising, and has guest speakers talking about a variâ€" ety of topics. There are also two youth groups for people 13 to 30 yearsâ€"ofâ€"age. Fellowship is imporâ€" tant here, and there are all kinds of outings such as skating and bowlâ€" My three favourite words: Don‘t Pay ‘til Spring. (OK, so four words.) The League of Mercy Program is a group of people who visit nursâ€" ing homes to give the elderly a boost. For young people, there is a drama group, and there are other fellowship and bible study groups as well. "For the new year, we‘re looking into a community kitchen where parents could learn how to cook nutritious meals for their families," explains Zelinsky. Because the Salvation Army is national, people in Oakville also have access to Salvation Army proâ€" grams outside of the town. There is a women‘s shelter, for example, hostels in Toronto for people needâ€" ing shelter beyond what Oakville can provide, a home for unwed mothers, and correctional services. Although the chances of abusing the services offered by the Salvation Army are small, appliâ€" cants looking for assistance are screened very carefully. "We take very seriously being a good steward of the money we receive," says Zelinsky. Oakville residents can help give families a Happy Christmas by donating food and unwrapped toys to the Salvation Army‘s Christmas Bureau. "I felt we all have so much, so I thought it was a good thing to share," says Gaunt. "My husband and I have always helped out the Salvation Army in some way."
