On Wednesday, representatives from the Hamilton Automobile Club (HAC) presented Halton Regional Police chief Peter Campbell with 8,500 keychains which will be handed out during the holiday season at R.LD.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoints. Bright red and bearing the slogan "Be the Life of the party â€" Thank you for not Drinking and Driving," the keyâ€" chains include a pocket in which drivers can keep a looney â€" more than enough to make a phone call if they‘ve had more than enough to drink. "Now you have one less excuse to drink and drive," said HAC public relations spokesman Jodie Murdock. "This is just another way of showing our commitment to stopping drinking and driving." In presenting the keychains, HAC director Michael Torsney explained this joint initiative is a natural extension of the mandate of both the police and his organization. "We are aware that one of the greatest concerns the Halton Regional Police Service and the Hamilton Automobile Club share is safe driving, especially at this time of year," he said. Torsney went on to say that during the last two decades as other issues have come and gone drinking and dnvmg campaigns have only grown. While statistics reveal a posiâ€" tive shift in behavior, he added, improvement is slow. Worse, the actual number of auto collisions in which alcoâ€" hol was involved has increased. What better reason, then, to reward conscientious drivers. "The beauty of these keychains is that they hold a dollar coin," said Torsney. "It gives people the motivation to take the coin out and call a cab or call a friend." In accepting the gifts, Chief Campbell said police share HAC‘s concern over preventable accidents, injuries and worse. While the number of people who perish on highâ€" ways is falling, said Campbell, still too many die. He said annually about 2,000 people die in air crashes worldwide. Half a million die in auto accidents, however, without nearâ€" ly the same amount concern shown. Earlier this month, HAC president Richard Congdon presented key chains to senior OPP officers at the district headquarters in Burlington. OPP officers at R.LD.E. checkâ€" points will also be handing out Variety Club coupon books. Murdock explained that the keychains had their origin in last year‘s ice scraper campaign. That was so well received, she said, that HAC decided to launch an even bigâ€" ger promotion. The result is 30,000 keychains being disâ€" tributed this winter to police in Halton, Hamilton, Haldimand and Brant County. "You don‘t mind rewarding people for doing something right," said Murdock.
