"It‘s a great way to play an old Melanie Evans Skater off to nationals in Halifax A member of the Oakville Skating Club put in an outstandâ€" ing performance at the central Canada divisionals in Ottawa on the weekend and as a result has earned a trip to the national figâ€" ure skating championships in Halifax January 11â€"15. Melanie Evens, a 14â€"yearâ€"old Grade Nine student at White Oaks Secondary School, scooped up the fourth and final spot in the ladies novice division to advance to the nationals. The division includes eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Ironically, to get to last weekâ€" end‘s divisionals in Ottawa, Evens had also scooped up the fourth and final spot at the secâ€" tionals in Richmond Hill. The three competitors that had finâ€" ished ahead of her at that meet all finished behind her in Ottawa. Evens managed a fourth place finish, over all, with a secâ€" ond in the short technical proâ€" gram and a fifth in the long proâ€" gram. "She skated a clean short proâ€" gram," said coach Paul Fisher. With the long program she was "a little shaky in the beginâ€" ning and punched it out in the end." Success does bring it some sacrifice, however. "We have to skate over Christmas," chuckled Fisher. Blades‘ streak is over The Oakville Blades‘ sevenâ€"game undefeatâ€" ed string under new coach Ken Moodie came . to an end Tuesday in Streetsville where they absorbed a 6â€"3 loss. The Blades, who were tied with Brampton for fifth place before last night‘s league games, will try to get back on track against the lowly Royal York Rangers tonight, 8 p.m. at Oakville Arena. Royal York, which is in seventh place in the eightâ€"team west division of the Provincial Junior A hockey league, will host the return engagement Saturday at 7 p.m. For the Blades, Tuesday‘s game was a case of deja vu. General manager Murray Walker said he thought the streaking Blades dominated the first period but "buy a goal." They unfortuâ€" nately managed to put one into their own net to give the Derbys a 2â€"1 lead after one period. In the middle frame, the Derby‘s extended the lead to 3â€"1 before Oakville came back with two goals to tie it up. Itâ€"was all Streetsville in the third period with three goals, including an emptyâ€"netter. The Blades didn‘t help their cause when they twice failed to capitalize on five minute majors to Streetsville. They were also playing without speedster Darryl Curtis, out six weeks with a broken collar bone, and Brent Strike and Mike Gamble who are both day to day with nagging injuries. During their last visit to Streetsville the Blades were even more dominant during the first half of the game but still ended up with an even bigger thrashing â€" 6â€"0. He said there‘s no danger of the team takâ€" ing Royal York lightly this weekend. "They beat us the last time out â€" nothing is assured." B.J. Hamilton and Jason Slaney both scored on the power play with assists to Mike Byrne, Dave Smith and Kent Williams. Williams added an unassisted shorthanded goal. * for photo, see page 26 favourite" ‘91 13qwaoag ‘AKepuy YIAVAY ITIIAMVO â€" S¢ Rep Hockey PEEWEE TRIPLEâ€"AAA OAKVILLE 4, WELLAND 4 (Dec. 12, home): Oakville built a 3â€"0 first period lead and held on to tie the visitors.
