The crime ring which was uncovâ€" ered employed the use of key cutting machines, code books, vehicle permits and contact persons in a variety of countries. Stolen cars were sold to buyers all over North America and shipped from all over the United States and Canada to points overseas. As of press time Canadaâ€"wide warâ€" rants had been issued for seven of the accused still at The coâ€"operative effort was designed to share resources with police internationally to root out indiâ€" viduals who have been using sophistiâ€" cated means to steal cars and reâ€"regisâ€" ter them in other jurisdictions. Sgt. Martin explained five cars involved in the ring were stolen from Oakville and Burlington. The vehicles involved, Sgt. Martin continued, were all highâ€" end models such as Lincolns, Acuras, Legends and others taken from area dealershxps Sgt. Martin said he could not divulge more details about the Intelligence Bureau‘s involvement given the undercover nature of the operation. He did say, however, that while Project Free Trade is officially over, police are now looking into "offâ€" shoots" such as the forging of docuâ€" ments. The individuals arrested in Ontario, Alberta and the United States have been charged with fraud, conspiracy to possess stolen property and conspirâ€" acy to utter forged documents. Project Free Trade â€" which started in 1992 with the recovery in Burlington of a single car stolen in the southern United States â€" culminated Thursday with charges against 17 peoâ€" ple across Canada and the U.S. and the return of $4.4 million worth of vehicles. Also being explored are ways to retrieve 32 more vehicles worth $1.26 million from Germany, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. According to Sgt. Joe Martin, Project Free Trade joined the Halton Regional Police Intelligence Bureau with members of the OPP Antiâ€" Rackets Branch, Metro Toronto Police Special Investigation Services, the Ottawa Police Auto Theft Bureau, the Peel Regional Police Auto Theft Bureau, the York Regional Police Auto Recovery Unit and the Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau. Halton cops > arid in busting stolen car ring Halton Regional Police were part of the joint forces effort which last week capped its twoâ€"year investigaâ€" tion into a stolen car for export racket with arrests and the recovery of 105 vehicles. The focus of the investigation was the sale of stolen vehicles to often unsuspecting buyers in foreign marâ€" kets. "It was a major conspiracy," he said.
