EO.E **% uropeans have been using ceramâ€" d:ic tile for cenâ€" turies. It was not only practical for their lifestyles but integrated properly, it created a beautifully, natural decoâ€" rative feature. In Canada, tile is traditionally a kitchen and bath material, but tile is used throughâ€" out the entire house in Mediterranean countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece. And while we see tile used only partially up a bathroom wall, in other nations the entire wall is tiled. Trims, inserts and borâ€" ders are also used differently in other countries. For several years, here in Canada, it was thought of as an expensive indulgence. But now, with the flood of affordable European tile on the market, it has become an integral feature of new home building. So if you‘re choosing tile for your new home, take some time to make your selecâ€" tions. Most new home builders these days offer an impressive array of tiles in variâ€" ous colours and sizes. Since builders include it in selected areas of most single family homes, it is important to choose your tile carefully. It is a premium upgrade that you will not wish to replace for a long time. For living rooms, dens, bedrooms and Florida rooms where traffic is moderate or light, almost any tile may be selected. For indoor use, the main consideration is how much traffic the floor will receive. zz~, NRS Brand Realty Inc. Residential Marketing Review n P Entrances and other areas where there is direct access to the outdoors will require tiles with good abrasion resistance and some degree of slip resistance, because they may be subject to trackedâ€"in wetness. Unglazed tiles, monocottura (onceâ€"fired) tiles or doubleâ€"fired glazed tiles with some added slip resistance would be good for those areas. For bathroom floors, abrasion resistance is not a critical factor. For shower floors, choose tiles with slip resistance and relaâ€" tively low water absorption levels. While a single, neutral shade is often chosen for floors, tile color can be selectâ€" ed with the same freedom as carpet color. It can be used as a decorative feature since there are a myriad of designs and patterns. For walls, there are a few, if any, restrictions. Wall tiles are generally applied for their decorative value. Although more expensive, they are a fabuâ€" lous alternative to wall coverings, since they do not peel and fade. If your new home features an attractive patio or other outdoor area, you may wish to consider tile. Ceramic tile, chosen carefully, and applied with foresight can offer years of enjoyment and add to the ultimate resale value of your home. Sat., Sun. Holidays: 11â€"6 weekdays by appointment.
