"I always give the job 120%." For incumbent Ward 3 local councillor Tedd Smith, the justifiâ€" cation for his reâ€"election in next month‘s municipal election is simple: there is no one running who is better qualified. The married father of two believes it‘s vital for an elected official to remain accessible and accountable. Smith says his preâ€" S y SECOND YEAR THE OAKVILLE BEAVER decessor, whom he beat in 1991 by over 600 votes, worked in Toronto and had an unlisted phone number. "You have to be a fulltime councillor. That means from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The issue of accountability is a very important one," says Smith, adding that his availability helps the problemâ€" solving process run more effiâ€" ciently. Smith believes his role is not one of politics, but of manageâ€" ment and making sure the best interests of his constituents are represented. A case in point is his concern that the town put aside THE ROCKIN‘EST SHOCKIN‘EST, FUNNIEST FASTEST STAFF THIS SIDE OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS! CAN YOU BARTEND? WAITER? WAITRESS? He is also adamant about reducâ€" ing town spending, maintaining an open public process and keepâ€" ing taxes in check. This alone is a huge responsiâ€" bility â€" what with shrinking transâ€" fer payments and other factors â€" which Smith says ‘drives home the point that the Town must be able to do more with less. Smith also has his sights set on several other issues of importance to the voters in his ward, includâ€" ing the completion of Ford Drive and Cornwall Road, keeping a close eye on the Kaneff and Genstar lands near the GO station and the implementation of the Third Heritage District. Smith is not in favor of the Eighth Line overpass which he believes will effectively split his ward in two. All in all, a heavy load for the next term which Smith believes will be best served by someone with experience. I don‘t think I‘ll retire until someone comes along who can d as good a job as me," he says. That job includes membershif in a wide variety of committees including the hospital Board 0| governors, the Humane Society LACAC, the Oakville Harbouts Development Authority, Site Plar Committee and the Specia Committee Against Impairec Driving.
