Attic ventilation helps home‘s interior ost modern homes, less than 40 years old, do not have what is known as a "traditional" attic with stairs leading up to a room with headâ€" room and a safe floor. Instead we have an attic access which is a hole in the ceiling of a closet or hallway with a piece of plywood over it. To get up there you need a ladâ€" der and some agility to crawl through the twoâ€"foot by threeâ€" foot hole and then carefully step only on the exposed joists. No flooring covers the joists so you must take care not to step on the insulation between the joists for fear of crashing At Woodcraft we‘ve been carrying furniture that doesn‘t need polishing for over 10 years...in fact it never needs polishing, OPEN SUNDAY ( The Bam: Workshop Showroom: Markham Rd. At best you would have a nasty patching job and a few skinned shins; at worst the patching job plus a few broken bones caused not by the fall but by the sudden stop of the closet floor. There is likely no light source up there, little headroom and stiâ€" fling heat in summer and perishâ€" ing cold in winter. Ideally the temperature there should mirror the outside air temperature. The ovenâ€"like heat in summer is stressful to the wooden strucâ€" ture and a source of unwanted radiation to the rooms beneath. The too warm temperature can cause snow on the roof to heat up to melting point during the day and to run down until it reaches the edge where the roof is cold because of the overhang. Local and national building codes call for about one foot of free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic area. That vent area can be at the gable ends (the top of the wall where the roof creates a vee) or through roof vents, or a ridge vent that runs the length of the roof ridge. Those are exits vents; the entrance vents are under the eaves (a flat area called the sofâ€" fit) and to meet the code requireâ€" ments you add up the total entrance and exit vents. Does the thought of coming up with a new look for 1/ your bathroom feel vaguely intimidating? Do you suffer from color decision phobia? Or perhaps you‘re the ambitious type with many ideas, but no clue as to how to synthesize them into a workable plan? Ridge vents are best done when a house is built but roof vents can be installed at any time. They can actually be done from inside the attic if you don‘t fancy work on a roof top. To manage this feat you mark off the perimeter of the vent, less the flanges, onto the underside of the plywood roofing near the ridge.
