He and Barbara have watched more and more women use their personâ€" alized training programs and incorporate weights or use the small weights and bands that are now routine in aerobics classes. MORE TOTAL WORKOUT ""It used to be you wouldn‘t see any women in there at all. Now we have lots," he said. To Barb Ferrone, what will make more women go into the rooms is eduâ€" cation. ‘"‘They have to realize they aren‘t going to get huge muscles like the . ," she said. "In fact, with high reps and low weights, women can get terrific toning results." Jeanne Abrahams is one woman who can‘t say enough about the benefits of weight training. A woman who often spends two hours a day working out on cardio and weights, she is enthusiastic _ about the benefits. ' Paul Neufield â€" coâ€"owner of The Gym â€" has many women using the weights every day. In fact, of the 56% who are female, 80% of them all use some kind of weight training program. "Most do a combination because they realize it‘s the best for overall fitness," he says. "If you want a toned body, you need resistance." Fitness instructors, too, are seeing the increase in the number of women who want toning and strength from weights. Lee Scott teaches an increasingly popular class called Body Sculpt â€"a class that mixes a short aerobic workout with longer, more intense strength thainâ€" ing. Scott says she sees more women coming out to her classes at Ferrone \ Fitness Centre who want to use weights" Scott thinks that the psychological : benefits are really important. "‘When you go back into the weight room, it can be intimidating. But then, when you start to feel strong and see what it can do, it makes you more confident to be back there. And if you feel strong, you will behave and act that way." "Teenage males are the worst. They think because I am a woman, I really don‘t know what I‘ m talking about when it comes to weights. But then, I see them doing 100 reps or something, and it‘s clear they need to be educated." "I feel stronger and when I‘ve finâ€" ished, I feel like I can conquer the world," she says. At Premier Health and Racquet Club and Mademoiselle Spa, a women‘sâ€"only area offers women the opportunity to work out oneâ€"onâ€"one. Such was the demand for women working out in a weight room; they have had one specialâ€" ly built for women. grams for them. She said women have to start thinkâ€" ing down the road, about the loss of bone density and the need to build stronger bones to offset osteoporosis. But she notes, women also have to be selfâ€"disciplined to use weights.
