(Photo by Joel Robertson) There is one hockey game you can count on being played â€" and that‘s the Oakville Blades home opener against the Burlington Cougars tonight, 8 p.m., at Oakville Arena. The Blades are loaded with offenâ€" sive talent but after last Friday‘s seaâ€" son opening 10â€"5 loss in Milton will be looking to come through with a grittier team performance. ‘ The Blades are now merged with the â€" Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA), and a new management team, including former Toronto Maple Leaf player Mark Kirton, has now vowed to steal a page from the new Toronto Raptors basketball team and give the promoâ€" tion end of it a huge boost. Tonight marks their first big proâ€" ject with a special opening night program lined up. Hockey fans can catch it all for free â€" providing they hand over a donation, of either food or money, to the local Fare Share food bank. Oakville‘s own Caroll Baker will sing the national anthem and a â€"member of the Toronto Maple Leafs is expected to be on hand for the honorary opening faceâ€"off. Free Blade Tâ€"shirts will be given to the first 300 kids who are 16 years of age and under and accomâ€" panied by a parent. The Blades will be cheered on to the ice by an honor guard of Oakville‘s award winning precision skaters. In the first intermission there will be a mini tyke game and in the second intermission there will be a shootout for prizes. And fans will be able to buy Blades season passes for $55 (a $125 value). Oakville Velebit make the playoffs Thanks to the scoring prowess of Jason Gibbons, Oakville Velebit soccer team are now just fighting to improve their playoff position â€" and not to make them. Oakville clinched at least a fourthâ€" place finish in the Ontario Soccer League with an improbable 4â€"3 vicâ€" tory over first place Woodbridge in Oakville Tuesday night before an appreciative audience. Oakville was down 2â€"0 and 3â€"1 before mounting an impressive threeâ€" goal comeback for a 4â€"3 victory. Down 2â€"0, things were looking darker than much of the weather this week when Oakville was tagged for a penalty shot. But the save was made, and Oakville manâ€" aged to regroup and mount a sucâ€" cessful counter attack. Jason Gibbons scored a pair goals with singles to Matt Honchar and Mile Ivancic. Gibbons has now scored seven goals in his last four games. One of those games (where he scored two goals) was a 3â€"2 victory over Scarborough, a team that recently won the Ontario Cup and will play in the national championships in Green. In the second game, a spirited comeâ€"back attempt by Oakville fell just short as they dropped a 5â€"4 decision. Oakville spotted the host team a threeâ€"goal lead before storming back to tie the game. Aaron Jarc put Oakville on the board and two goals by Jamie Green in less than 10 secâ€" onds evened the tally. Blyth Gill scored the other Oakville marker. Assists went to Brett McGrath (2), Mike Ruppel and Keith Zavitz. Atoms split pair in annual friendship series The Oakville tripleâ€"AAA atom hockey team split a pair of exhibition games against Rochester over the weekend in the annual friendship series. The squad of 11â€"yearâ€"olds successfully killed seven penalties to preâ€" serve a 3â€"2 victory against the yearâ€"older Rochester team. Oakville goals were notched by Josh Pippy, Blyth Gill and Brett McGrath. Assisting on the scoring plays were Gill, Pippy and Jamie Edmonton next week. Oakville, who entertained Guelph last night, close out the seaâ€" son Saturday, 8 p.m., at Bronte Athletic Field against secondâ€"place Bramalea. Oakville is still in the running for the League Cup.
