THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ember 28, 1994 COMMENT morning to the sound of loons and the vibrant colors reflected in the water was fabulous. I can‘t think of a more enjoyable way to spend a fall weekend than a canoe trip. And yet, all of us encounâ€" tered mostly scepticism mixed with bewilderment when we spoke of our plan to canoe through a section of the park. We had snags of course. A paddle dropped out of the canoe at a most Not that Sheila was the kind of woman who would be running to make her man dinner in the best June Cleaver manner. But she has a spark of mischief that hasn‘t subsided since we met when we were both 10â€"yearsâ€" old. As always, she just couldn‘t resist. We made our way along the beauâ€" tiful lakes through the park, heading for some of the more isolated sites at the lower end of the lake. PUD OKAY, ED‘s IN THAT GCAL ... WHO ELSE wants To BE GCALIE? or some reason, one of the most satisfying moments of the entire canoe trip came hen we hefted our canoe alongside group of men heading up the same tony portage out into the gorgeous ake in Algonquin Park. There were many groups of men ut for the weekend, such as the Froup from Oakville, who told us hey had made this weekend trek for ears. And there were lots of couples r father/son groups. Mostly men, by ur count. But the three of us, throwing our acks onto our backs and walking the nostly uphill stony path of the portage, were the only allâ€"female group. We were, as one of my oldest friends said facetiously, into some serious female bonding this weekâ€" end. "So ladies, I guess you‘re going to beat us and get the best site, right?" one of the Oakville men said to us as we were loading our waterproof bags, our packs, and the ever present, ever vital Thermaâ€"Rests. "Oh sure, and we‘ll get dinner going, too!" said my friend, Sheila, tongueâ€"inâ€"cheek, as we pushed off for the paddle that would take us into the park interior. It was spectacular, paddling through the still water even though we went against the wind that first day. Judith Muncaster Town Clerk TOWN OF OAKVILLE 1225 Trafalgar Road 844â€"5000 ‘oup â€"people properties AN INDEPENDENT MEMBER BROKER outdoors finding the right wood along the beach to last us for hours, the sight of the odd campfire across the water, or enjoying the quiet of the dark night. Sheila was on her first canoe trip. "When I knew I had to carry everyâ€" thing I brought, I realized I really didn‘t need that much." She is also the one who wanted to "do her roots" before the trip, just in case they found her face first in the lake and they‘d have to do her hair at the funeral parlor. A rather inauspiâ€" cious, if not downright gloomy start, to the whole thing. So was the guy at Canoe Lake when we registered and told him our route. "And what‘s the color of your tent fly?" he asked. "What does he want to know that for?" hissed my youngest sister, alarmed. "Just so we know what to look for if we have to," he answered, cheerily. It was, at different times, frustratâ€" ing, hilarious, contemplative, satisfyâ€" ing â€" making time, making connecâ€" tions. Little wonder men have been doing the male bonding thing in the woods for so many years. And small wonder, more and more women are doing the same. ntario PLAN AHEAD TODAY...
