Rather than size up the competiâ€" tion before deciding to run, Hardacre â€" a married mother of one â€" made her candidacy official way back in February. In order to devote her energies on the campaign, she left her job of seven years and has been regularly attending Town Hall meetings. To keep herself free from special interest groups, Hardacre is not accepting any campaign contriâ€" butions and will cover all expenses herself. "It‘s not the politics I‘ m interestâ€" ed in, rather it is serving the people of the community," says Hardacre, who sees Council as a way to give something back to the town, not as a steppingâ€"stone to higher office. She views her bid as an extenâ€" sion of the volunteer work she has been involved with for years. Currently Hardacre is a shelter manager for the Oakville Red Cross Emergency Services. (One of her recent projects was the mock disaster "Exercise Dakota.") She was also a counsellor at Interim Place, a Mississauga shelter for abused women and children, where her duties included everything from advising those in need to going on police escorts. Hardacre has also been a volunâ€" teer with the Oakville Waterfront Festival and is a member of West Oakville Ratepayers, the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and the Oakville Players. On the professional side, Hardacre‘s position as a senior financial analyst with Livingston Group Inc. has given her an extenâ€" sive background in developing and coâ€"ordinating budget strategies. She left the company to devote time to learning about municipal government and going doorâ€"toâ€" door listening to neighbors‘ conâ€" cerns. Hardacre‘s four main objectives are as follows: â€" Accountability. Town staff and Council hold a special trust, says Hardacre, and must be honest and independent from all special interest groups â€" hence her personâ€" allyâ€"funded campaign. â€" Make local government a "people business." Hardacre mainâ€" tains communication between elected officials and residents is vital in order to understand what they‘re thinking. Her counselling work has made her an approachâ€" able and willing listener, she says. â€" Run government like a busiâ€" ness. Fostering responsible manâ€" agement and living within one‘s means are both qualities Hardacre believes she has not only learned but also demonstrated in the corpoâ€" rate world. â€" Commitment. Be devoted, informed and involved, says Hardacre, who says issues come and go but the need for guiding principles never wanes. She believes that by registering in February, she has demonstrated Hardacre, who says issues come and go but the need for guiding principles never wanes. She believes that by registering in February, she has demonstrated that political opportunism is not her vocabulary. Leaving her job attend meetings and learn proc dures only reinforces this dedicd tion, she says.
