Leasee is responsible for Respect For Law camp a hit with kids By KATY CLARK Special to the Beaver When _ 17â€"yearâ€"old _ Greg Staskovich, of Burlington, volunâ€" teered to help out at Halton‘s Third Annual Respect For Law camp, he never imagined he would be rescued amid simulated gunfire from a bank robber‘s car by four uniformed memâ€" bers of Halton‘s Tactical and Rescue Unit. Staskovich, who was surprised by the speed and ease of the dramatic resâ€" cue, was just one of several children and adults selected to participate in the realâ€"life rescue demonstrations put on by Halton‘s various police units at Oakville Police Headquarters this past weekend. For the past three years, the Optimist Clubs of Halton have sponâ€" sored and organized the threeâ€"day Respect For Law camp to help foster a trusting relationship between the region‘s young people and its law enforcement officers. "We want the kids to be more aware of what the police do and to realize the police aren‘t just there when you are in trouble," said Don Smith, one of the organizers of the threeâ€"day camp. "We know we‘re normal, but a lot of (the children) here don‘t," said Constable Ken Hannah. The camp is held for 12 and 13â€" yearâ€"old boys and girls who will enter Grade 8 in September. "(The children) are at the age when Summer Melendez, 13, had the opportunity to turn the detonator that resulted in the ball of flame seen here as part of last weekend‘s Respect For Law Camp. their peers are really pushing them; they are easily swayed," said Don Fournier, a member of the Optimist Club of Upper Burlington. "We feel if we can get through to one or two of them, we‘re doing well." This year, 70 children attended lecâ€" tures and watched demonstrations by the Tactical and Rescue Unit, police dogs, Burlington Fire Department, Halton Bomb Unit, Military Police, CN Police, and Crime Stoppers. Each child paid $25 to attend. The Optimist Club raised $5,000 for the camp and donations covered the remainder of the expenses. (Photos by Barrie Erskine) The casual atmosphere and fun seemed to have the desired effect. By Saturday morning, many of the campers had already changed their opinions about the police. "I thought the police would be strict, but they‘re just like anyone else," said 13â€"yearâ€"old Derek Friesen.
