Rich in history, these cemeteries are the resting place of many earliest settlers. The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to protectâ€" ing our community‘s history and heritage. Maintaining these older cemeteries is only one way this is accomplished. Each epitaph within these pioâ€" neer cemeteries tells a unique story about the individual who is buried there. It is important to remember our community‘s heritage and treaâ€" sure the many ways our early setâ€" tlers contributed to the Oakville we know today. OAKVILLE/ST. MARY‘S CEMETERY Oakville/St. Mary‘s Cemetery is located on the bank of the Sixteen Mile Creek, off Lyons Lane. In March of 1858, this land was given to the Town of Oakville by the mayor, George K. Chisholm. The removal of remains from the old Cemeteries are vital part of town‘s heritag THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 5041 Fairview St. {at Appleby Line) 639â€"7881 Burlington L.JLL Mates bed with matiress and 2 drawer storage unit Canadian made corner bunk with mattresses Very sturdy. BRONTE CEMETERY Bronte Cemetery is probably one of the oldest cemeteries in Oakville. The cemetery is located at the foot of West Street off Lakeshore Road. The first burial to take place in this cemetery was that of Hannah S. Haviland, aged 4 weeks, who died on the 28th of October, 1823. Early settler, Philip Sovereign, and his son, Charles, are also buried in this cemetery. Does Belyea Street sound familiar? John Belyea â€" another cemetery on Reynolds Street for reâ€" interment in the new Town Cemetery was immediately begun, although the transfer was not comâ€" pleted for more than 20 years, in January 1881. also in Brampton, Hamilton, Stoney Creek an London Locations early settler â€" rests in Bronte Cemetery as well. He died on April 14th, 1825, at 50â€"yearsâ€"ofâ€"age. Other well known names that appear in Bronte Cemetery are Adams, Butler, MacDonald, Ribble, Triller, and Williams. MERTON CEMETERY Merton/Mount Pleasant Cemetery was established in 1880 on the Grounds of the Mount Pleasant Church. Merton was a Hamlet that was established in 1812 around the junction of the Second Line (Bronte Road) and Lower Middle Road (Queen Elizabeth Way). The first person to be interred in the cemetery was George Hebblethwaite, a member of the ongmal church board who passed away in 1886. Some of the names of families who attended the church and who were interred in the cemeâ€" tery include: Luscombe, Joyce, Douglas, Speers, MacDonald, Patterson, Oakley, and Carpenter. By 1918, the congregation was so land for the cemetery off his farm. Daniel‘s wife Millicent (Post) is buried in Munn‘s Cemetery and it i assumed that Daniel is also buried there, although there does not appear to be a marker in his name. WEDGEWOOD (COX ESTAT CEMETERY The Wedgewood Cemetery is located on the south side of Wedgewood Drive and was estabâ€" lished in 1833. This site is also the resting place for some of Trafalgar Township‘s earliest settlers. The absence of modern medicine in th 19th century meant that a large number of children died at an earl age. This is evident in Oakville by the large number of grave sites for young children in Oakville‘s Pioneer Cemeteries. The first person to be interred in the cemetery was George Hebblethwaite, a member of the original church board who passed away in 1886. Some of the names of families who attended the church and who were interred in the cemeâ€" tery include: Luscombe, Joyce, Douglas, Speers, MacDonald, Patterson, Oakley, and Carpenter. By 1918, the congregation was so small that it became necessary to close the church. This property â€" which consisted of approximately 200 acres â€" was located on the southeast corner of the Sixth Line and Dundas In March, 1927, the church was deconsecrated and was offered for auction. Out of respect for the peoâ€" ple interred in the cemetery, howevâ€" er, it was decided that the cemetery would not be sold and would remain undisturbed. MUNN‘S CEMETERY Daniel Munn secured a Crown Grant as settler on Lot 15, Concession 1, south of the Dundas Street in 1808. The church was eventually sold, demolished, and the materials were carried away for use in other buildâ€" ings. ONLY CEILING FAN DIST. The earliest marked grave is for Manhettable Fish â€" the wife of Oliver Fish â€" who died on January 29th, 1833. In 1909, the property surrounding the cemetery was purâ€" chased by Herbert Coplin Cox and the cemetery has since been known as the Cox Estate Pioneer Cemetery Highway. A log cabin school was erected on the Munn‘s property and double as a church on Sunday. With a church established in the school house, it was necessary to have a cemetery. In 1820, Daniel sold the land for the cemetery off his farm. Daniel‘s wife Millicent (Post) is buried in Munn‘s Cemetery and it i assumed that Daniel is also buried there, although there does not appear to be a marker in his name. The Cox Estate Cemetery was evidently a resting place for young children. Two of the three marked graves are for the infant children of Samuel and Sophia Harris. The unmarked graves of other local chi dren are believed to be located in this cemetery also.
