Because sunlight enhances the chemical reaction, ozone levels are often higher during the summer when the sunâ€" light is stronger and atmospheric condiâ€" tions favor smog formation. Cities and heavily industrialized areas usually have higher ground level ozone concentrations. The area of southern Ontario and Quebec, frequentâ€" ly referred to as the ‘Windsorâ€"Quebec Corridor,‘ is frequently referred to a ‘river of ozone‘ during the hot summer months. This ‘river of ozone‘ flows northwestward from the American Midwest and may be responsible for 75% to 90% of the ozone levels observed here. But, this ozone may also be found in suburban and rural areas due to wind and weather patterns. Ozone acts as a powerful respiratory irritant at the levels frequently found in the Torontoâ€"Hamilton area during the summer months. Symptoms include tightness of the chest, pain and difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing. The people most at risk for shortâ€" term effects from ozone are children, the elderly, and people with asthma, emphyâ€" sema, bronchitis â€" any chronic respiraâ€" tory or cardiac disease. However, even healthy people can be affected by elevated ozone concentrations and should be careful about doing work or strenuous exercise outside on hot, hazy sunny days when smog levels are high. The greatest risk exists for people This article was submitted by the who participate in long and vigorous _ Halton Lung Association. SEE WHAT YOU GET!H exercise when ozone levels are high: This is due in part to the increased ventiâ€" lation, and thus the increased dose of ozone delivered to the lungs. i a Ozone levels are typically higher during the late afternoons in the sumâ€" mer. Therefore, jog, bicycle, or do other aerobic exercise in the morning before smog levels climb. If you must exercise during elevated ozone concentrations (bike couriers in Toronto and Hamilton, for example), reduce your speed, so your respiratory rates and corresponding air pollution exposure will not climb. If you experience tightness in the chest; coughing or wheezing, stop exercising immediately. During high smog episodes: * Use your car only when absolutely necessary and try walking, cycling or using public transit instead. If you must use your car, make sure it is regularly serviced and never leave it idling for prolonged periods of time. * Stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. * Avoid extended periods outdoors, especially is breathing is badly affected.* * Keep your indoor environment cool and clean. * If taking medication for respiratory illness, follow the directions of yout physician; if breathing becomes more difficult, see your physician or go to th¢ nearest hospital emergency room. * Do not use aerosol sprays. * Use waterâ€"based paints rather than oilâ€"based paints. Ozone readâ€" ings below 32 are considered acceptâ€" able; 0â€"15 is very good, 16 to 31 is conâ€" sider good, and 33 to 50 is poor.
