It is no secret that Canadian wines have been winning more than their share of medals at both domestic and international compeâ€" titions. Indeed, Ontario cleans up when it comes to the dessert wine category as there are no better ice wines to be found anywhere. Not so with our dry red wines which seldom receive the recogniâ€" tion they deserve. This must have been heavily on his mind early this spring when Walter Schmoranz â€" the winemaker of Pelee Island Winery â€" selected one of his red wines and sent a few bottles to the international competition at Vinitaly in Verona. to none these days I am not sure if I had the opportunity to evaluate this wine as one of the international judges, but my peers must have been truly impressed by the entry, as they awarded a bronze medal to this wine, ahead of all those submitted by Italy and France. The wine judged was a 1991 Pinot Noir from the Pelee Island Winery, down Kingsville way on Lake Erie. A great achievement of course, but what made this espeâ€" cially rewarding was the fact that this was not a specially selected wine but an ordinary and general listed Pinot Noir. Of course, I took this into conâ€" sideration last week when I chose some of the better wines from Ontario at one of my regular wine tastings held in Oakville. The theme of the tasting was Ontario Wines â€" a result of a number of engquiries I had recently from readâ€" ers. I started the tasting with the 1990 Riesling from Konzlemann â€" a wine that received many awards and a wine that is regularly listed for about $8.80. Clean, fruity, and with typical Riesling characterisâ€" tics, this wine was an instant hit with my tasters. The second entry was the 1992 barrel fermented Trius Chardonnay from Hillebrand â€" a wine that had been barrel fermentâ€" ed and aged in wood. Normally, I do prefer clean fruity wines over those aged in wood, but I must Frank Vismeg and staff invites you to experience the culinary creations of our talented chef. This is an excellent, clean, and somewhat spicy wine that sells for $9.40 at the Culotta wine stores. I, certainâ€" ly, can suggest making a visit to the winery in Oakville to taste a few of the wines there. admit that the Trius was very much to my liking. Full in body, the wine had only a hint of oak, enough to give it character but not enough to overpower the Chardonnay taste. This wine is available only at the Hillebrand stores for about $14. My first red wine was the Pelee Island Pinot Noir, the one that won the medal in Italy. Although it was a 91 vintage, the 93 which is presently in the stores is just as good, if not even more drinkable. A good price, too, at $9.50. A 1992 Cabernet Merlot from Stony Ridge Winery was my next selection, and as it turned out, an excellent choice. Very drinkable and lively, the wine is well made along the Bordeaux lines, but much more mellow than most othâ€" ers. I found this one at the LCBO store for $9.95. The final red wine was my favorite, the Konzelmann Pinot Noir #1, a semiâ€"dry red wine that has the consistency of a German Auslese. It is an outstanding wine for about $10, but only to be found at the winery. My final wine went right along with an auslese â€" the 1993 Inniskillin Ice Wine. There is nothing I can say, other than that I am in full agreement with all the gold medals this wine won in the past. This outstanding wine sells for about $45 for half a bottle at some liquor stores and at the Inniskillin Wine Stores.
