It takes nearly $400,000 to run D.AR.E. annually yet volunteers are being sought who can spare only a few hours a year. Those with children or grandchildren enrolled in school â€" or those who are concerned about today‘s youth â€" are encouraged to step forâ€" ward. Their help would be especially appreciated now since the program is experiencing some difficulty meeting the demand. A total of 12 more Grade 6 classes have been added for the next school year, bringing the total to 68 classes. The 17â€"week course teaches nine and 10â€"year olds selfâ€"esteem, assertiveness and the ability to say "No!" to the use of drugs and alcohol. D.A.R.E. exposâ€" es children to the challenges they may face in the future and provides them with the ways and means to meet these challenges headâ€"on.
