"The young O‘Meara also realizes that he‘ll still be eligible to fight junior (15 and 16 year olds) next year, so time is definitely on his side. The Oakville resident fights out of McGrory‘s in Hamilton with one of Canada‘s top coaches Vinny Ryan. He works out at the club three times a week and in the off days runs five or six miles. Like all amateur athletes he‘d like to make it to the Olympic Games. He‘d also like to end up south of the border on a boxing scholarship. In the title bout for the Ontario junior lightweight boxing champiâ€" onship last weekend, Sean O‘Meara proved that experience doesn‘t always win out. O‘Meara, who began boxing three years ago, also picked up the ‘best prospect‘ award, and he‘ll take the hope that goes with it into the Canadian national junior champiâ€" onships in Alberta this summer. The training camp runs from July 1 to 7 followed by the competmon which runs to July 10. While he‘s confident that he‘ll be ready, he admits he‘s in the dark about potential opponents. His father, John O‘Meara, explained that "you never know who‘s going to come out of British Columbia or Newfoundland." The 15â€"yearâ€"old Oakville resident, who is just finishing up Grade 10 at T.A. Blakelock high school, put his comparatively short 12â€"bout resume on the line against an opponent with 25 bouts. And he came out on top. It was a real hard match," said O‘Meara in an interview at his Lakeshore Road home. "He (Thomas Mahood of Lambton) is a friend of mine." He advanced the championship with a Saturday win over a flghter from Hornpayne. is The Ontario champ " SPORTS OAKVILLE TIRE SERVICE LTD. 847â€"6000 AND AUTO CENTRE s 1050 South Service Rd. The team now has more than three dozen players on the roster but desperately needs some linemen, said coach McDonald. What it also needs, he added, is other adult volunteers, in particular coaches. The league is hoping to build up a close relationship with local high school football proâ€" grams. Players who suit up for the new league will find themselves in game shape right at the start of the high school football season, promised McDonald.
