(Photo by Riziero Vertolli) Oakville Sports Digest _ nother comeback The Northern Football Conference is I only two games old, but already the kville Longhorns are getting into the bit of turning on the jets well into the me. And it has left coach Tony Molnar ndering if it might catch up to them e game soon. "That‘s the concern," he agreed. "Can come back every game?" While the final score may have been â€"9, the Longhorns victory over the lidogs Saturday night in North Bay s anything but a drubbing. In fact, the two teams were toe to toe ough three quarters with Oakville ually having to mount a miniâ€"comeâ€" ck to forge ahead 10â€"9. In the fourth quarter, however they w it open with three touchdowns. North Bay opened the scoring with an ‘converted touchdown in the first quarâ€" and added a field goal in the the secâ€" d quarter. Oakville played tit for tat oring a second quarter touchdown an McAlonan carried it in), which Mike ckson converted, and added a third farter field goal from Jackson. The fourth quarter explosion saw arterback Mark Demerling hit Jamie ootton for no less than three touchâ€" pwn passes (Oakville followed up with foneâ€"point, a twoâ€"point and a missed inversion). ./ Wootton managed to finish the day th 205 yards on six receptions â€" three them for touchdowns. Demerling chalked up 365 yards in e air, recording 20 completions in 37 es. He gave up one interception. North y managed a 129â€"yard air attack with completions out of the 30 tries. On the ground, Oakville gained 59 yards on 24 carries â€" the bulk of it by Craig Mitchell who gained 30 yards on eight carries. North Bay gained 43 yards on 22 carries. Defensively, Molnar was extremely pleased with linebacker Brett Fitzpatrick who chalked up nine tackles and a fumâ€" ble recovery and with Al Campbell who had five batted balls and one intercepâ€" tion. In the previous week‘s season open, the Longhorns had to erase a quick 14â€"0 deficit to defeat Scarborough Crimson Tide 28â€"21. NEXT GAME After playing their exhibition game and home opener at Burlington‘s Nelson Stadium, the Longhorns are back at Oakville‘s Bronte Field for their game Saturday night against Brampton. Fans are reminded that the kickâ€"off has been moved up from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate a cable television taping. Two bronze medals Two of Oakville Trafalgar High School‘s rugby teams have won bronze medals at the provincial championships. As reported in Sunday‘s Oakville Beaver, the senior rugby team â€" which this year won the Halton high school title for an unprecedented 24th year â€" picked up a bronze medal last Friday at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships in Sarnia. Coach Greg Sora, however, had no time to enjoy his team‘s success as he had to join the junior team at the junior OFSAA championships in Markham on the weekend. The junior team suffered its only blemish in the opening game which â€" the way the tournament was set up â€" Eagle GA Performance Radials. 4 for 3 Aquatred Revolutionary unfortunately put them out of the hunt for gold. The 7â€"3 loss to Brock high school from Kenington, said Coach Sora, was "very close." After that, the team remained in the win column, defeating Trenton 45â€"0, Lawrence Park (Toronto) 14â€"0 and Halton Region rival Notre Dame (Burlington) 13â€"3 for the consolation championship (and the bronze medal that goes with it). The final game was a repeat of last week‘s junior Halton final which Oakville Trafaigar won 9â€"8. While disappointed that the team didn‘t get to show its mettle further into the gold medal round, Coach Sora said he was "very happy" that the team manâ€" aged to bounce back with some impresâ€" sive play (outscoring the opposition in the four games 73â€"10), culminating in a "final victory against a team (Notre Dame) we had beaten by only one point in the Halton final." As for the senior team, he said "the boys overachieved." Ranked fifth going in to the tournaâ€" ment in Sarnia, he said that while they were beaten by the top ranked team in the semiâ€"finals (19â€"5 to Lawrence Park of Toronto), they did manage to defeat the fourth seed in pool play (5â€"0 over Colonel By) and the third seed for the bronze medal match (19â€"7 over Port Perry). The seniors also beat host St. Clair 15â€"3 in their other pool game. Rolley hockey on tap Oakville will be hosting a 12â€"team roller hockey tournament this Saturday (June 11) at Glen Abbey from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be six visiting teams and the finals in the three age groups will be (See ‘Carnival‘ page 20) Allâ€"Season Radials. Fresh off a silver medal perforâ€" mance in the 1500â€"metre race on Friday, Mary Unsworth, a Grade 10 student at Appleby College, pulled off a crowdâ€"rousing upset Saturday, winning gold in the junior girls 800â€" metre race. Her performance gave Appleby College its first ever gold at an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship. To do it, the 16â€"yearâ€"old Burlington resident had to beat some pretty stiff competition, including: second place finisher Carmen Douma of Woodland Christian School in Breslau who won the event last year; and third place finisher Mary Jane Richard who represented Canada at the world junior cross country champiâ€" onships earlier this year in Budapest, Hungary. Unsworth, who was competing in her first ever OFSAA track and field championships, learned a key lesson from Friday‘s 1500â€"metre race which, despite a silver medal, wasn‘t totally satisfying. Explained Unsworth: "I got boxed up. I didn‘t have a great start. I had a hard time getting around people." Still, she did clock in at a perâ€" sonal best time of 4:35.67. Mary Jane Richard took the gold medal while Carmen Douma won the bronze medal. On Saturday, in the 800â€"metre race, her start was so good it almost cost her in the end. She had planned to stay with Mary Jane Richard, but as it turned out things worked out much better. "At the first bend I was ahead, and I just decided to keep on going." But while her rocketâ€"like start propelled her out of the traffic, she nearly paid for it at the end when her legs "seized up in the last 100â€" metres." Appleby‘s school chaplain and track and field coach, Father Bob Lennox, said that "when she crossed the finish line (in a personal best time of 2:11.82), her legs were wobbling and I thought she was going to black out." "I thought her gold medal ... was a remarkable upset because the girl she beat out (Mary Jane Richard) is a nationalâ€"calibre runner. But that‘s Mary, she‘s very determined to win, no matter what the sport." As if the dynamics of the race itself wasn‘t enough excitement, OAKVILLE MINOR SOCCER PLAYERS A Boys Girls Skills Clinics x# _ Full day, 1 week programmes July 4â€"Aug. 5 e Skills/Games/Modified tournaments e Ages 7 â€" 14 by division e Swimming * Therapist e Nutrition e BBQ lunch A World Cup Experience KEVIN GRANT â€" Teacher, Canadian Olympic player, CSL Coach, provincial license TOSH MACFARLANE â€" Teacher, Semiâ€"Pro CSL, Level 3 coaching, boys girls coach MARTHA HALL â€" Canadian University Allâ€"Star, Captain Queen‘s Women‘s team RICH MAGCGIOTTO â€" Captain Bowdoin College Div. Offer valld to Oakville Beaver "Shop Locally" card holders there was also the aspect of 3,000 noisy fans anticipating an upset. The accompanying increase in both pressure and nervousness was actually beneficial, she said. "I have a lot of confidence now, it (the gold and silver medals) really sets me up nicely for the cross country championships in the fall," said Unsworth who, after winning a bronze medal at the OFSAA cross country championships two years ago, failed to crack the top 20 finâ€" ishers at last fall‘s event. An accomplished field hockey â€" player and swimmer, Unsworth only recently turned her attentions to competing in the 800â€"metre and 1500â€"metre events, and she still recâ€" ognizes the need to improve. "I have good speed in the longer races, that‘s a strong point. But I have to work on my endurance." A member of the Burlington Legion Track and Field Club, she is hoping to get selected to this year‘s national junior championships in Ottawa. And obviously the athlete would love to defend her junior OFSAA crown next year in her final year of eligibility before she moves up to senior. HIGHLIGHTS Appleby‘s other athlete at OFSAA, Gareth Robinson, placed 10th in the midget boys 1500â€"metre race in 4:30.85 and 13th in the midget boys 3,000â€"metre race in 9:42.56. Queen Elizabeth Park‘s Nevin Campbell was eighth in the senior boys high jump with a leap of 1.9 metres. Other Oakville athletes that made it to OFSAA included Milton Tanswell (junior boys high jump), Laura Gates (midget girls 400â€" metre) and Claudia Rank (junior girls 400â€"metre and 800â€"metre) from Oakville Trafalgar High School; Janie Bereza (midget girls 80â€"metre hurdles) and Iwonka Kossek (midget girls javelin and shot put) from St. Thomas Aquinas; Sue Jeffers (senior girls shot put) from White Oaks; Marcia Mcintyre (junior girls triple jump) from T.A. Blakelock; and Kojo Aidoo from Loyola (midget boys javelin and shot put). Soccéer camp Oakville will be the site of the Ontario Soccer Association‘s elite soccer camp program this summer. The camp for competitive or select team members between the ages of 10 and 14 years of age will be held at W.H. Morden school from July 18â€" 22; A special goalkeeper camp has been arranged for July 4. The camp â€" which features Team Ontario coaches and nationally licensed instructors along with proâ€" fessional players and coaches â€" is aimed at serious players who are interested in developing themselves further in the sport by participating in advanced skill and tactical developâ€" ment sessions throughout the week. Players interested in attending should contact Bryan Rosenfeld or Estelle Nicholls at the Ontario Soccer Association at (4164495â€"4250. »
