In her acceptance speech, Bailey spoke about women winning the right to vote in 1918 which was "the first stepping stone towards meeting the needs of women. Since that time, women have become increasingly involved in our parliamentary system and various other leadership positions. Ultimately, we can say that women achieved social reform by emerging from the traditional wifeâ€"motherâ€"misâ€" tress. Prior to this, she attended St. Mildred‘s Lightbourn School for one year . What she really likes about Appleby is the fact that sports and activities are mandatory. She takes a sport each term, four nights a week; as well as, two activâ€" ities which can be joining a club or doing community service work. "Swimming has always been my favorite sport, and we came sixth overall in Ontario this year," says Melissa. "I also play field hockey and soccer, and was a candystriper for three years. I think sports and activities help encourâ€" age an allâ€"round student." Although she has been busy with her sports and activities, Melissa has still managed to keep her average at 89% women to be active in social and public affairs. It has not gone unnoticed that males still dominate the number of seats in parliament. It isn‘t enough to change the laws, institutions, and customs; rather, we must also alter the public opinion of women in a new order of social context."
