United Way The United Way of Oakville will holding its sixth annual golf tourâ€" Inament at the Wyldewood Golf and Canadian intermediate super heavy weight champion Blake Stevensofi Oakville‘s new champ Oakville now boasts one of the top youth boxers Blake," said his mother, Gail. Out west, there was simâ€" ply not enough boxers in his super heavyweight class to train with or box against. The family has hooked up with the Atlas Boxing Centre in Etobicoke. His father, Jim, is a notable amateur boxing trainer himself, having trained several national champions durâ€" ing a 22â€"year amateur coaching career that has included stints in Vancouver, Kamloops, Saskatoon and, most recently, Regina. With Atlas, he‘s now the director for the club‘s amaâ€" teur boxing program and he will lend his expertise not just to his son but to "everyone that comes in the gym." Ideally, he said he‘d like to develop the club‘s amaâ€" teur program to the point where it‘s holding a monthly card. While Toronto‘s size made it ideal for the younger Stevenson to train in, Oakville‘s lack of size make it ideal for the family to live in. "Being from a smaller city, that‘s what we tend to gravitate towards, I guess," said Jim. He said his son‘s dream of hitting the medals â€" even gold â€" at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta is an obtainable one. The fourâ€"time Canadian champion has already postâ€" ed some wins on the international scene against come "fairly good" opponents. "I personally think he has a great chance ... If he keeps progressing, he‘ll be right in there." in the country â€" he moved here from Regina just a couple of days ago. Blake Stevenson, who turns 18 in June, already had the basketball hoop up (in Regina, he was on his senior high school basketball team) and was leisurely lofting threeâ€"pointers in the driveway of his north Oakville home when the Beaver showed up for a recent interâ€" view. Back in January, the elite athlete, who packs 215 pounds on a 6‘4" frame, boxed his way to his fourth straight Canadian title, this time winning the intermediâ€" ate (17 and 18 year olds) super heavyweight title in Saskatoon. He won it the previous year as well, and prior to that had won the junior heavyweight title in 1992 and the junior light heavyweight title in 1991. His most recent tournament was a youth invitational tournament in Poland earlier this spring which attracted boxers from more than a dozen countries. Stevenson ended up with a bronze medal after bowâ€" ing out to the eventual gold medal champion from Romania. The next big date on his calendar is the world junior championships in Instanbul, Turkey in September, and in preparation he‘ll attend a national training camp in Montreal in August. "I‘d like to get a few bouts in before then," he said. The family moved to Ontario "specifically for LIONS CLUB gOAKVILLE Congratulates the Winners of SUPER DRAW held at Oakville Arena on Thursday, May 19, 1994 rriz® _ This year‘s celebrity host will be ‘Oakville‘s own Ron MacLean, the popular host of Hockey Night in .
