The Japanese tree peonies lost a few flower buds, but most of the yellow hybrids were killed to the ground. They are regrowing from the roots, but will bear few flowers this year. A tenâ€"year old Lutea Ludlowii that is an unusual plant for this area was killed and so far, shows no growth at the ground. It was packed eight feet high with leaves. Other lutea species seedlings four and five years old covered with plastic frames retained their buds and will flower this year. Hardiness is difficult to predict as is the protection required to bring simâ€" ilar plants through the winter. Daylilies planted in wooden conâ€" tainers left outdoors all winter have survived and Stella d‘Oro, an early The herbaceous peonies as expected came through unscathed and many of their seeds sprouted in the lawn. The snow kept the birds from finding the seeds and as it melted provided moisture. I dug up fifty little seedlings which are for sale at the Oakville Horticultural Society plant sale â€" May 21st, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Paul‘s United Church, on Rebecca just west of Morden Road. ~ The cold snowy winter and |. cool wet spring was not the best for people, but has turned out quite well for plants. The tops of all my roses were killed to the ground except for one stem of New Dawn, but all have started new growth from ground level mostly on young stems. Some forsythia in the open lost their flower buds, but othâ€" ers in more sheltered spots and under deep snow flowered profuseâ€" ly. Wet spring great for plant Perennials may be dug and divided before they grow two large. Retain as much soil around the roots as possible, but pull the roots apart rather than cutting them. This is a good time for weeding. Even the pigweed will bring its roots with it after a rainfall. Controlling weeds now will reduce future effort as everyone knows that weeds spread logarithmically. The large pink cone shaped flower is accented by the large everâ€" green leaves. I have seeded a new variety called Winter Flowering Hybrids that have pink, lilac, purâ€" ple, or white flowers in late April. These.are hardy as far north as Barrie. The cool weather has increased the length of the spring blooming season by a week or two. The early tulips are all in flower as the late varieties bloom with them. There are about 1,500 tulips flowerâ€" ing on the front lawn. The white and pink magnolias have flowered for about three weeks. One early peony species has bloomed and the fern leaf peony should open next week, two to three weeks later than usual _ Herbaceous peony seedlings, Japanese tree lilacs planted in pots and left outdoors over winter surâ€" vived under the:snow. In balance, it was a good winter and looks like a good spring in the garden. Bergenia is a spectacular sight. yellow dwarf everbloomer has a bud. NIGHT TABLES 69+ OTTAWA ST. ON.
