Highway could be completed by 1998 (Continued from page 1) this jobsOntario project moves ahead â€" and generates more than 20,000 jobs â€" decades sooner than it would have without this partâ€" nership." The final agreements to be hammered out include the develâ€" opment, design, construction and operation of the 407 and its toll system. . According to Ministry of Transportation spokesman Anne McLaughlin, Highway 407 conâ€" tracts already scheduled for this year will create approximately 3,000 jobs. These will go ahead as planned even though negotiaâ€" tions are onâ€"coing. When the agreement between the province and CHIC is comâ€" pleted this spring, McLaughlin said more jobs are expected to be created in time for the 1994 conâ€" struction season. Last year CHIC â€" comprised of eight Ontarioâ€"based engineering and construction firms plus three financial companies â€" submitted a proposal to finance, design, conâ€" struct and operate the first phase of the new toll road which will link Oakville and Markham. In addition to Monenco AGRA and Dufferin Construction, the CHIC includes Armbro Holdings Inc., M.M. Dillon Limited, Giffels Associates Limited, Proctor and Redfern Limited, The Foundation Company of Canada and Totten Sims Hubicki Associates. The financial team includes the Bank of Nova Scotia, Barclays Bank of Canada and Gordon Capital Corporation. Another consortium which also bid on the project was the Ontario Road Development Corporation. According to Pouliot, the competitive bidding process resulted in cost savings of some $300 million. The 407 toll road project â€" unveiled last year by premier Bob Rae and Pouliot â€" is designed to reduce traffic pressure on the 401, the main transportation artery through the Greater Toronto Area and the second busâ€" iest freeway in North America. (It carries 350,000 vehicles a day.) GRAND OPENI The first phase will stretch from the 401 at Winston Churchill Boulevard in the west to Highway 48 in the east. When complete, the 58â€"kilometre, sixâ€" lane freeway will extend from the 403 in the west to Highway 35/115 in the east. As a result of provincial fundâ€" ing commitments announced last year, said McLaughlin, parts of the highway are already under construction. Traffic is expected to be using the initial section â€" Highway 400 to Highway 427 â€" by 1996. Ideally, the entire project should be completed by 1998. 10â€"9 SATURDAY MONâ€" FRI SUNDAY 11â€"5 SOUNDINGBOARD 338â€"0566 Experienced Educated In Social Work Call In Confidence 2520 BRISTOL CIRCLE BETWEEN WINSTON CHURCHILL #403 OFF DUNDAS BEHIND AIKENHEAD‘S AN INDEPENDENT MEMBER BROKER Member of the Oakville/Mitton District plus Toronto Real Estate Boards ...
