While the units can be used to transport unwieldy items like tall plants, priority will be given to physiâ€" cally disabled customers and seniors. With only two vehicles, response time may be slightly slower, but Blake is hoping preâ€"bookings will allow drivers to prepare schedules for their entire day. According to Blake, the units will be available 24 hours a day 365 days a year by calling Halton Taxi at 844â€" 4300. The company also has free direct lines available at several area malls, Sheridan College and the Oakville VIA Rail station which is also equipped for wheelchairs. "The response has been really good," beams Blake, who said some handicapped and elderly residents have already booked a seat to take them to Christmas dinners and other functions. For the moment, however, Blake is content with a pair of the $50,000 vehicles manufactured by Creative Carriage Ltd. of Cambridge. Designed around a Chrysler minivan, each incorporates a raised roof, four doors, two wheelchair positions plus ambulaâ€" tory seating for three. A selfâ€"storing wheelchair ramp allows the vehicle to be used for standard transportation. "We have been working on this project for five years, hard for the last two," said Blake. "The dream is that all the taxis will become this kind of vehicle." According to company managing director Doreen Blake, the system went into effect last week after two specially equipped "paratransit" vehiâ€" cles hit the streets. While preâ€"booking is advised, the units which can accomâ€" modate wheelchairs, scooters and other devices are dispatched like reguâ€" lar taxis at no additional charge. (The 10% fare discount for seniors still applies.) After five years of research, red tape and financing, Halton Taxi finally has its wheelchairâ€"accessible cab serâ€" vice up and running. Even so, plans are underway to buy two more units by next spring. Fortunately, Halton Taxi‘s airport service qualified the company for a federal grant.
