Even the Montreal massacre in which female engineering students were killed was briefly reâ€"enacted in the process â€"with enlightening results. Julie suggested women oppressed by men and she and Lisa devised a taunting skit portraying males and their macho, chauvinistic attitudes. Brad and Daniel came back with their own versions of featherâ€"brained women. From there, the issue escalatâ€" ed to anger and near blows. When they had calmed down, they examined the feelings they had so ferâ€" vently displayed in and out of the skits and finally decided that everyâ€" thing they had done and said would become their presentation the followâ€" ing day. C The End. Basically, this was the play called Short Circuit that a packed audience in the Oakville Trafalgar High School auditorium witnessed Wednesday. From their enthusiastic applause, they seemed to rank it as something speâ€" cial. of getting together something dramatâ€" ic for their class the following day. What theme would they weave their presentation around, they wondered? SAVE 50% MORE DN TOP QUALITY CANADIAN FURNISHINGS COME AND BROWSE THROUGH MORE THAN 15,000 SQ. FT. All four are profesâ€" sional actors who have come up the ranks through public and high school plays, finishing off their training in university or college theatrical coursâ€" es or theatre schools. Payne said she took private lessons in acting. The Golden Horseshoe Players, founded 12 years ago in Hamilton by Sharon Enkin, is a nonâ€"profit theatriâ€" cal company with grants from the Canada Council, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation and from the Ontario Arts Council. Facing governâ€" mental cutbacks this year, the compaâ€" ny has been forced to turn to private corporations for help. The fundâ€"raisâ€" ing campaign it is now embarking upon is led by Jordon Sullivan, husâ€" band of Halton Centre MPP Barbara Sullivan. Earlier this year, they had audiâ€" tioned for parts in a package of four upcoming plays the Golden Horseshoe Players would be presentâ€" ing to students during the 1993â€"94 school year in Toronto and area. Enkin said a new play will be introduced to school children in January. Aimed at Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, Solomon and the PROUD TO SELL CANADIAN In all the plays, the skills of the actors are called upon. "They have to be able to sing, dance and, in one play, even juggle," she said. Big Cat is woven around wildlife conservation in East Africa. And this the four young actors do as they put on two plays a day during each school week, travelling from one school to another by a bus they share with all their stage equipment. "Yeah, we really get tired of travâ€" elling around," they said. "But we‘re lucky to have weekends off. Most professional actors only get one day off a week." The four plays in which the four actors star all have social issues as their themes. For young students, there are Streetsafe and Peacemaker which Barrett described as a very popular play about antiâ€"racism that is overcome when proponents get to know each other. For Grades 4 to 8, Video Wars tackles the problem of violent images surrounding children and their ability to resolve conflicts in real life. And then there‘s Short Circuit for high school students with its Man/Woman theme. When the four actors asked OTHS students for comments folâ€" lowing the performance, one student thought the emotions exhibited in the play were too extreme, while another said they had to be extreme to get the point across. When one of them asked Barrett how he could exhib it all that rage, he replied it As far as they‘re concerned, they‘ve become a family. "We have the odd squabble but we‘ve become closer," said Barrett. "It‘s nice." (See ‘Play‘ page 24)
