Never mind the ghosts, goblins, witches and wereâ€" wolves â€" you‘ve got a scary array of sticky, sugary, sweet treats to deal with! Your child‘s safety is your first concern. When your child arrives home after "truck or treating," look over the treat bag. Allow your child to eat only those treats that are preâ€" sealed and packaged in wraps or conâ€" tainers that cannot be tampered with. To be on the safe side, homemade foods or those that come in boxes that are not sealed should not be eaten. Allergies to nuts are quite common among children. Try to avoid offering packages of nuts or chocolate bars with nuts as Halloween treats. Treats are important for kids. Cavities are a concern, but hope is on the horizon! There are ways to proâ€" vide Halloween goodies in a way that lowers your child‘s chances of develâ€" oping dental decay. As a parent you don‘t have to say "no" to all the sweet treats â€" there are steps you can take to lower the dental damâ€" age they make on your children‘s teeth: What‘s important is: (1) How often the food is eaten â€" Don‘t overdo a good thing. The more often a sweet treat is eaten throughout the day, the greater the chance for tooth decay. Limit the number of treats your child can have each day. (2) How long it is in the mouth â€" Sweets that are chewed over a longer period of time, gum or chewy candies, cause more dental damage because the sugar is in contact with the teeth for a longer time. (3) Consistency or stickiness of the treat â€" Sweets with a sticky or chewy texâ€" ture are more damaging because they make it easier for the cavityâ€"causing bacteria to adhere to the teeth. (4) The other foods that are eaten along with the treat â€" These treats are of little nutritional value, so save them for after meals. If on,, _ _SaveTime jrruew) Save Money pure savings. Make sure you kids do too. * Give your kids a flashlight to help light their way. * Tell your kids to go only to homes with lights on. * Tell them never to go anywhere with a stranger. Halloween safety tips * Ask your kids to walk, not run. And to look all ways before crossing the street. Trick or treat on on one side of the street, then the other. children snack on these treats between or before their meals, their appetite for healthier foods will be decreased. Eating these treats with a meal instead of between them also decreases the dental damage that can occur. The extra saliva in the mouth may neutralize the acids that eat away at tooth enamel. * Check the treats your kids colâ€" lected before they are eaten. * Encourage your kids to wear makeâ€"up instead of a a mask so they can see properly. And, a short cosâ€" tume will make it easier for them to walk than a long one. * Make sure your kids go trick or treating with family or friends. Make sure you know their route. Here are some safety tips from Stay Alert . . . Stay Safe, the national streetproofing organization founded in 1987 and funded by the Canadian Tire Child Protection Foundation. While witches, ghosts and goblins come out to haunt us on Halloween, parents should be on the alert for some of the more serious dangers that a potentially cause harm to children. Parents are encouraged to discuss the following tips with their children to ensure they enjoy a safe and happy Halloween. Pack away some of the loot for future special occasions. Use the‘ sweets to decorate a birthday cake, trim a gingerbread house, muffins or cookies. * Better than sweet treats . . . .choose sugarless gum, popcorn, or cheesies to reduce the cavity potential at other homes. Daily dental care is even more important during these times when kids are eating more sweets. Ideally, kids should eat sweets one at a time and in a place where they can brush their teeth with a fluoridated toothâ€" paste afterwards. Insist that your kids brush their teeth within 10 minutes after the sweet treat is consumed; after 10 minâ€" utes, the acids start to eat away at their tooth enamel. Here are some other ideas: + To avoid the "Nutrition Nightmare" at other homes . . . .give away stickers, fancy pencils, erasers, or crayons to the "trick or treaters" that come to your door. * At your Halloween parties, focus on fun activities to keep the kids entertained. Keep the snacks for times when the kids are hungry or thirsty, not as a way to keep them occupied. 1/2 hours or until golden brown VARIATIONS: Oct. 27, 1993
