In the modern political era, Rud Whiting took the riding for the Liberals in 1968 only to be ousted by Progressive Conservative Terry O‘Connor in 1972. The Liberals regained the riding in 1974 when Dr. Frank Philbrook won the elecâ€" tion, only to be defeated in 1979 by Conservative Otto Jelinek who has held the riding since that time. What to look for: forget the New Democrats, The Natural Law Party and _ Independent Rev. Ken Campbell. The election will be fought among The Reform Party, the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives. Look for much of the Tory support to be siphoned off to Reformâ€"that‘s what the Liberal team of Bonnie Brown is hoping for. If this does occur here, it will mean the Grits will again reâ€"take the riding thus continuing the area‘s image as a ‘swing‘ riding. The following were the results of the 1988 election: Otto Jelinek (PC): 35,032; Bonnie Brown (Liberal) 22,794; Richard Banigan (NDP): 6,614; Paul Calloway (Christian Heritage Party): 1,081 and Jim Stock (Libertarian): 344. The margin of victory for Otto Jelinek was 12,238. Historically, the area now known as Oakvilleâ€"Milton, was known as Halton before a series of seat reâ€"disâ€" tributions that has now linked the north and south areas. The following were the results of the 1984 election: Otto Jelinek (PC): 37,625; Oriena Currie (Liberal): 14,074; Kevin Flynn (NDP): 9,062 and Chris Kowalchuk (Green) 1,476. The margin of victoâ€" ry for Otto Jelinek was 23,551 votes. For the past 14 years, former Progressive Conservative MP Otto Jelinek has represented the riding winning a massive majority in 1984. But this lead was halved durâ€" ing the 1988 campaign, the second term of Brian Mulroney. o matter who wins the fedâ€" Neral election Monday night, the Oakvilleâ€"Milton riding will have a new Member of Parliament.
