Variety of topics in short story collection Some Days You Get the Bear by Lawrence Block published by William Morrow and | Company, Inc. 1993 Lawrence Block is probably best known as a writer of mystery books and the creator of two wellâ€"known ficâ€" tional detectives: cynical private eye Matthew Scudder and burlgar/detecâ€" tive Bemnie Rhodenbarr. His writing, however, frequently ventures into other fields (including several nonâ€"ficâ€" tion books for writers), and this collecâ€" tion of his short stories brings together work on a variety of topics. While the themes of the stories range from the violent underworld of Teresa Lix Un en the city to the romantic life of a bacheâ€" lor who sleeps with a teddy bear, Block‘s voice is always vividly clear. In even the darkest stories, he brings in a touch of humor and sometimes startling insights into character and why people do the things they do. "Someday I‘ll Plant More Walnut Trees" is a powerful little story about a young wife with a baby and an abuâ€" sive husband, but it‘s also about the patterns that rule people‘s lives and how difficult it is to change them. "The Burglar who Dropped in on Elvis" is a great Bernie Rhodenbarr piece that‘s guaranteed to make you smile â€" Bemnie is hired to break in to the top floor of Graceland and take photos of Elvis‘s bedroom. Is the King still living there, hidden away from the world? How will Bemie get past the security systems? I‘ve enjoyed several of Block‘s novels, but I found this collection of stories particularly entertaining because of the variety it offered.
