Shredâ€"it Canada Paper recycling company takes its shredding trucks to clients‘ offices By CHERYL ELLIOT Special to the Beaver Recycling has become a boom business for some entrepreneurs. Take Greg Brophy for instance â€" he is the owner and president of Shredâ€" it Canada, a paper shredding and recycling company on the border of Oakville and Mississauga. Brophy started his company just over four years ago with one person and one truck shredding office papers on site. He made $520,000 in sales that year. Today, 30â€"year old Brophy employs 32 people, owns 13 trucks, expects to make sales of $3.1 milâ€" lion this year, and is franchising his operation. Earlier this year he received the 1992 Young Entrepreneur Award from the Federal Business Development Bank of Canada. Security is one of the unique feaâ€" tures of Shredâ€"it Canada. Many companies want to recycle their waste, but are concerned about the security of their documents, dccording to Brophy. "They don‘t want people going through their garbage," he said, "so they hire a firm like us." Brophy‘s firm will place containâ€" ers for paper, secured with deadâ€" bolts, into a client‘s office and "blue box their desks." ‘"With most recycling programs, you can only put white paper into the containers," said Brophy. "With our program, you can put in all grades of paper except newspaper." On a regular schedule, Shredâ€"it Canada‘s uniformed and bonded employees will collect the paper, newspapers and pop cans. The paper is shredded using a crossâ€"cut process that ensures total destruction, processed and compactâ€" ed onâ€"site in a company truck. The client has the option of observing the shredding through a viewing window. BALES OF PAPER At the end of the day, the truck brings its load back to Shredâ€"it‘s recycling centre and the paper is compressed into bales weighing, 1,300 pounds. Each day the compaâ€" ny ships out one tractor trailer with 20 tons of paper to paper mills in Quebec and Wisconsin, USA. Brophy provides the setâ€"up for the containers free of charge. He does not require his clients to sign a contract. He makes his money by the service he provides. "We charge $2.65 per minute for the time we are at the clients‘ locaâ€" tion," said Brophy. Shredâ€"it Canada has about 3,200 clients ranging from small to large companies and government. ‘"They don‘t all have a recycling program," said Brophy. "Some of them we just service every two months." In Oakville, the company has 150 clients, including Oakvilleâ€" Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Sheridan College; 28 clients are on a regular recycling program. Shredâ€"it Canada has branch offices in Ottawa, London, Kitchener and Kingston. The first Shredâ€"it Canada franâ€" chise operation recently opened in St. Catharines. The company has also branched out into the United States, a move made easier with the help of the Free Trade Agreement. "To get my papers to go to the United States is a lot easier with the FTA," said Brophy. "If you are a professional and have certain skills, then you can go in and develop your business." Although the U.S. branches are Canadian owned, there has been a slight name change. Shredâ€"it America is the company‘s name in Buffalo and Los Angeles. Brophy got on this fast track to one of his trucks. The company (Photo by Riziero Vertolli) success after graduating with a Masters in Business Administration from McMaster University in 1988. "The recession was just starting when I graduated," he said. "I didn‘t want to join a big company and get lost in the spokes â€" I wanted something that would grow if I put a lot of effort into it and that‘s what this business is." But Brophy‘s entrepreneurial streak surfaced before this. In high school he started his own driveway sealing business. In university he supposed himself by buying and selling 11 houses. When he was ready to strike out in the recycling business, he had already amassed enough equity and established a track record that made it easy to secure a bank loan to buy his first truck. Brophy says he has learned a lot about the value of giving good cusâ€" tomer service and handling employâ€" ees from his previous businesses. "We do it right the first time," he says, "That‘s the motto of our busiâ€" ness." FABRICLAND U Oe tss Let‘s Cb mb BACK TO SEWING! Sale in effect Sept. 1â€"18, 1993.
