Conditions were summarized as "desâ€" perate." Mariam Bhabha has travelled to warâ€" torn Bosnia on two separate occasions since the fighting began in the former Yugoslavian Republic 17 months ago. She has seen firstâ€"hand the mass destruction and the human suffering; she admits she is gripped by it. Obsessed. Her 17â€"yearâ€"old daughter has said she lost her mom when she went over to Bosnia. In a way she did. Certainly, Mariam would agree it changed her life profoundly. For it is one thing to read the words splashed across a newspaper and quite another to see and touch and hear the horror stories in person. The Oakville woman is driven by them. It was December of last year, she was on her second trip to the war zone when she met a woman who recognized her. Bhabha did not know the woman, however; she had seen thousands of refugee faces in the two weeks she had been there before. "‘This woman came running across the crowded gymnasium. She was cryâ€" ing, screaming. The young man with me, who driving me from camp to camp, translator her words. ‘She knows you,‘ he said, ‘she knows your name.‘ I a fast, inexpensive, highâ€"quality family So come in soon. restaurant. She hugged me and wept and said, ‘You‘ve come back! You‘ve come back!" It rocked her. "‘This is what relief work is about," she said. "Coming back. Not abandonâ€" ing these people." You don‘t have to have a PhD to speak to the people in the small vilâ€" lages," the relief worker explained, "to listen to them. They say nobody cares. They say the world has forgotten them." Much of the world has forgotten. But not this woman. "I knew when I came home my misâ€" sion had just begun," she said. Since August of 1992 she has been working tirelessly through the Bosnian Canadian Relief Association. "I know I‘m naive," Mariam Bhabha said near the end of a wideâ€"ranging interview. ‘I‘m just a middleâ€"aged, midâ€" dleâ€"class suburban housewife â€" maybe a dreamer." Maybe so, but clearly this forthright woman with the lively brown eyes is a dreamer to be reckoned with. She is the mother of two teenagers, a teacher, a relief worker and peace activist, a humanitarian and a Director of the Bosnian Canadian Relief Association (BCRA). ; Mariam Bhabha, bom Rossignol, is a fascinating woman. During the sixties she was active on the University of Toronto campus in youth groups protesting the Vietnam War and working with the young Liberals of the day. Her social conâ€" science never needed much urging, it seems. Twentyâ€"two years ago she married a fellow named Mohammed Bhabha of Indoâ€"Pakistani lineage and the Islamic faith. After several years of careful research and study Mariam converted to Islam too. She took to wearing a chador and going to Mosque on Fridays, became active in Islamic study groups in Halton and also earned a degree in Islamic Studies.
