"It is important not to get sideâ€" tracked by the recreational interests of a small minority," concurred Oakville resident Leanne Sircusa. "While I respect those interests, the health and wasn‘t sure whether she was right or wrong, cast her vote in favor of the gun control motion. For Pat Lockhart, of the Glen Abbey _ Community Policing Committee, it was a "daunting" expeâ€" nence to address such a large crowd. However, the death of a Loyola high school student in her own comâ€" munity sparked her interest in the matâ€" ter. "It touched me. I have young chilâ€" dren and it hit home â€" it happened here in Oakville," said Lockhart. "I don‘t want to shed any more tears," said James, asking council to support the coalition. On Aug. 13th, Lee Bickerstaff, an 18â€"yearâ€"old Loyola student was shot dead by an Opp service revolver in the Oakville home of an OPP Deputy Commussioner. She sparked an angry hum from the crowd when she continued to say that people get hurt in disputes when there are guns around, prompting the mayor to issue a warning to the crowd to respect her opinion. Teen faces charges in boating mishap Larry Whitmore, executive direcâ€" tor of the Ontario Handgun Association said that the coalition‘s aims were ultimately geared towards banning handguns and pointed to the coalition‘s circulation of a petition from Concordia University calling for the banning of all handguns as proof the aims of the coalition. He called the banning of handguns a "draconian" move with no basis in fact. In the end, council adopted a motion drafted by councillor Sean Weir that supported specific aims of the Montrealâ€"based Coalition for Gun Control including the banning of miliâ€" tary assault weapons, greater controls on the sale of ammunition, stricter penalties for criminals with firearms and registration of all guns required in the future. She said the coalition was seeking endorsement of three principles â€" the registration of firearms, a ban on miliâ€" tary assault weapons and more control on ammunition. Despite Wendy Cukior of the Coalition for Gun Control stressing that her association was not seeking the outright ban of handguns, many gun owners in the crowd were skeptiâ€" cal. safety of a community outweighs the recreational interests of a small minorâ€" ity.” Bird, Stephen Sparling, Weir and the mayor. Those opposed were councilâ€" lors Tedd Smith, Liz Behrens, Fred Oliver, Ralph Robinson and Kathy Mark Brown Graham, Absent were Jim Smith and Bill Logan. None of the six sailing students â€" all aged 12 to 14 â€" received life threatening injuries. The worst injuries involved a broken nose, facial lacâ€" erations and lost teeth. All six were treated at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and released. Also treated were two other students (one from Oakville and one an exchange student from Germany), who were also in the power boat. After the collision the instructor jumped into the lake to help rescue the students. Charged with failing to maintain a proper lookout, failing to proceed at a safe speed, and failing to keep out of the way of a sailboat is Erin O‘Connor, 19, of Tipperton Crescent. She will appear in Oakville provincial court on Sept. 21st. The power boat collided with one of the sail boats it and dumped the six teenage female students into the water. Halton police have charged a sailing instructor with three offences under the Canada Shipping Act after a power boat collided with a sail boat from the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club Sailing School, last Wednesday. Many of those on the side of the gun owners questioned the credibility of the gun control coalition, claiming it had a hidden agenda and misused statistics to further its own political purpose. Some, like Paul Briggs, of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, called on council to deal what was within their jurisdiction, rather than a federal matter and scrap the resolution from the coalition. Other gun owners and representaâ€" tives said it was at the criminals that needed more legislation, not law abidâ€" ing gun owners. Oakville resident and member of the Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club Wayne Gray said he didn‘t believe Oakville had a gun control problem and questioned council‘s time spent on the issue. He presented a petition with more than 200 names from fellow citizens believing council had better things to do with its time. She called on council to be "sensiâ€" ble" about gun control and not be naive when it came to endorsing a coalition whose aims have changed. Clinical psychologist and competiâ€" tive shooter Dr. Judith Ross said the fact the coalition is being endorsed by police associations, among others, doesn‘t mean anything. She said many police associations are "hiding behind the skirts" of the coalition because they simply want to be the only ones carrying firearms. Later, when queried by Flynn about her statement, she said she didn‘t mean anything "sinister" about it, but that police associations were on record as being opposed to private gun ownership. 56 Lakeshore Rd.
