Budget-minded car buyers can also choose the 2-door "S" sedan for maximum value. me the sculptured door panels to the smooth curves of the dashboard, it is quite evident that Toyota had no corners to cut. The result is a rich- looking coordinated interior and solid-feeling switches. All the hard work in computer engineering the Tercel's body panels has paid off in excellent noise isola- tion, a solid body structure. and a sur- prising amount of interior roominess. Toyota Tercel is built to last Best of all, Tercels are designed to stay attractive. from the rich but hard- wearing seat materials to the exten- sive use of galvannealed side and underbody panels to stave off corro- sion. On the whole, 81% by weight of the steel used in every Tercel is the rust-proof galvannealed variety. Under the hood of every Tercel resides an 82 horsepower. 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine which provides an optimum balance of performance and economy. Tercel's single over- head camshaft, 12-valve cylinder head design and use of an advanced electronic multi-point fuel injection system ensure maximum fuel econo- Saturn moves into its second year in Canada doubling its product w offerings, showcasing technologi- cal advancements. and continuing its product tefinement. These are but a few of the characteristics that have estab- lished a high value relationship between Saturn and its customers. No compro- mam Just commitment. Saturn lineup introduces wagon and coupe models Saturn's electronically controlled fpur-speed automatic transmission is designed to work smarter. not harder, in two innovative ways for 1993 models. Installation of a revised shift pancm Stabilization logic in the computer soft- waie helps reduce undesired back-and- forth shifting - known as "hunting" - between gears when the vehicle is trav- elling uphill. F The powertrain control module (PCM) constantly monitors vehicle speed in relation to accelerator pedal pinpoint. When speed is reduced and more throttle is applied to increase torque, the PCM will automatically extend the time and/or inhibit the trans- mission hom shifting into a higher gear until torque requirements are met. This technology lets the computer-controlled transmission operate automatically in much the same way and with an equally high level of performance as a manual- ly-equipped Saturn. but without requir- ing the driver to physically downshift. As a result, the transmission shifts less often and the vehicle is more responsive. Along with an improvement in driveability, this logic can also extend component durability. The second innovation on the auto- matic transmission is a downhill grade braking logic. Using a "fuzzy logic" algorithm, it allows drivers not accus- tomed to manually downshifting to find the appropriate gear to slow the vehicle down as it accelerates downhill. Again, the PCM computer is the brains of the system. It weighs the values of a number of variables to determine if a downshift is required, including the calculated grade, vehicle speed, throttle position, brake application intensity and the amount of time braking. If the logic justifies a gear change, downshifts from fourth to third or from third to second are commanded and the car will be held in that gear until the throttle is applied or the vehicle reaches level ground. The automatic operation is smooth and natural, and will likely go unnoticed by the average driver. However, with reduced braking effort required. brake system life can be enhanced. 1993 Saturn sc, Coupe my and excellent engine response at all speeds. To meet severe Canadian driving conditions, all models are equipped with a heavy duty battery, starter, alternator and heater. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a standard S-speed over- drive manual transmission on DX and LE models. The light clutch action and exceptionally smooth shift link- age ensure that shifting the gears is a pleasure in town as well as on the open road. Optional on DX and LE models is a 3-speed overdrive auto- matic. The 3-speed design is intend- ed to make best use of engine power in all conditions. from highway pass- ing, to zipping away quickly from a stoplight. The thrifty Tercel "S" is only available with a high-efficiency All Tercels have a MacPherson strut front suspension engineered to provide the best possible ride as well 4-speed overdrive manual transmis sion. Proving that high technology can play a major role in the affordable small car market. Saturn introduces a Traction Control system as standard for all auto- matic transmission-equipped models equipped with ABS. This full-tinte system optimizes available from-wheel drive traction to provide good balance of forward accel- eration and lateral stability of the vehicle when it's driven under slippery condi- tions. This system integrates and utilizes Saturn's existing ABS. engine and trans- mission control hardware. Saturn's Traction Control system is automatically activated when the car is started. If front wheel speed is grater thartthatofthemarwheels,suchasdur- ine acceleration on icy pavement. the amount of power required to maintain traction is adjusted through computer management of engine spark timing. transmission gear and fuel controls A flashing "ttaction active" telltale signals the driver of a wheel-slip condition and thatthesystemisreducingpowtothe drive wheels. While Traction Control can help pe- vent the car from getting stuck, the sys- tem will not help get it unstuck. Should the car get stuck in snow, for example. some wheel slip may be beneficial. To override the active system a switch located at the base of the instrument panel can be manually set to the 'off' position. 1993 Toyota Tercel 4-Door Sedan as crisp, nimble handling. To aid maneuverability. power steering is now standard on the LE sedan, as well as on all 4-door DX Tercels equipped with an automatic transmis- sion. The rear suspension continues the Tercel tradition, with a trailing torque beam axle suspended on coil springs. All Tercels now feature stan- dard Michelin all-season, steel-belted radial tires. Tercel DX has a 60/40 split and fold-down rear seat to help expand trunk space, a walk-in assist feature on twodoor sedans. child-proof mar door locks (4-door). full fabric sears, and such little conveniences as a remote trunk and fuel door release, a trip counter. cup holder. a vanity mir- ror and map pockets in the doors. As a result. all Tercels come with such niceties as a day/night rear view mirror, wipers with a mist feature (with an intermittent setting on LE sedans), full carpeting, a door ajar warning light an electric rear window defroster and side window de-misters.
