"Although we‘re doing pretty well in. older areas, we‘re got to capture the new people coming into town." said Bill Deyell. Needless to say, not many people slept well that night. The worst of the squall occurred during my cabinmate‘s 2:004:00 a.m. watch. For four hours at the peak of the storm, we were subjected to Gale Force 8 winds. When we awoke in the morning we couldn‘t see the floor of the cabin. Until next week, )G'/z,/ L CL,ZLW( When I tried to get back to sleep, I was reminded that my bunk is directly under the galley. Whack, bang, slide; whack, bang, slide. The large pots and crates on the galley floor were sliding back and forth right over my head and crashing into the walls. "Groan, L can‘t sleep", came from the bunk across from me. Shortly after I went to bed the storm got increasingly worse. I was woken up by something falling on me. On the next roll everything slid off the desk and landed on my poor room mate who was on the bottom bunk. Then we started pitching violently from bow to stem, as well as the rolling from side to side..All the lockers not securely fastened came flying open. Whack, whack. My storage hammock started hitting the wall. Then we started rolling deeply from side to side again. I was almost thrown out of my top bunk. I had to lie against the bulkhead with my arms and legs spreadâ€"eagled to stabilize and stop from rolling off the bunk. On our second night out from Curacao we hit some pretty rough weather while I was on the 10:00â€"12:00 p.m. watch. Although the helm was getting increasingly difficult to steer and the wind had picked up, it wasn‘t too bad at this stage. Dear Oakville: Our Oakville head office staff, branch staff and associates wish Sarah more memorable adventures, and continued smooth sailing. Deyell‘s eagerness to encompass all of Oakville in its drive for funding stems from a greater dependency on the United Way that social agencies are experiencing, due to cutbacks from another funding source, the province. Glen Abbey, River Oaks and West Oaks Trails. It is also targeting northâ€" ern areas in its monthly United Way page in the Oakville Beaver‘s North News. ..... As a whole, though, Oakville has responded generously to the call for help. It stood eigthth in 124 United Ways across Canada which, in 1992, raised a quarter of a billion dollars and supported 3,842 agencies. Windsor stood at the top of the list with a per capita donation figure of $26.12 folâ€" lowed _ by â€" Sarnia, â€" Ottawa, Peterborough (at $17.09), London, Toronto, Calgary and Oakville ($14.37). At the bottom was Morden, Sask. at $1.36. Deyell noted that Oakville‘s per A Proud Sponsor supporting Sarah on ‘Rovaz LePAGE] her voyage (Deyell was unable to quote per capita spending before 1991 because the agency‘s accounting system switched from net reporting to gross reporting "to tie the campaign into its capita dez==tion was down fractionally from 1991 ($14.93) but attributed this to a burgeoning population which town officials pegged at 114,000 last year as compared to 101,000 the year before. This adds to the agency‘s overall expenses such as contributions to the Toronto and Ontario United Ways and to Toronto‘s campaign, its own administrative and campaign costs as well as community services such as volunteer training, the Oakville United Way directed $270,000 in donations to other United Ways across Canada but received only $136,000 in "designations in". Despite its growth and its effect on the per capita donation figure, Oakville did well collectively. It raised $1,638,000 in last year‘s campaign which represents an 8.6% increase over 1991 at $1,508,000. Deyell said he would like to have distributed more to the Oakville United Way‘s 31 memâ€" ber agencies than the $1,100,000 it did but that figure still represents an increase of $42,000 over 1991. financial reporting.")
