He makes no bones about it. Interviewed recently at his beauâ€" tiful Bronte home (which he and his wife built largely with their own hands), the Saskatchewan native was neither coy, nor unduly humble. Retired in 1990 as Chairman and CEO of McCormick Canada (the spice company), he laughed as he recalled his student days. "I remember distinctly being asked by my French teacher, ‘What do you want to be?‘ and I said, I wanted to be ‘the boss‘; I didn‘t even have to think about it." He meant it then â€" and he means it now â€" although clearly his motives have shifted. After retiring from McCormick, he became more deeply immersed in the voluntary, nonâ€"profit organization IUFST (International Union of Food Science and Technology). In 1991, he chaired the 8th World Congress of Food Science and Technology in Toronto where 1400 delegates from 73 countries converged. In January of this year, he became secretaryâ€" general of that organization. The head honcho, top dog, numero uno. ANNUAL WINTER SALE CANAC TAKES OFF ::ss2 ce Meanwhile, back in his home office in Bronte, after putting his World Congress to bed in the fall of 1991, Jack was scouting out his own community for something to engage his executive prowess. His wife Joan, until recently â€" owner of T.J. Cinnamon Bakery â€" was on the local Tourist Advisory Board. She mentioned that the Waterfront Festival was having difficulty getâ€" ting off the drawing board. Jack, not being a shy guy, picked up the teleâ€" phone and called Mayor Mulvale and offered to Chair the steering committee. What readers should know is that although the Meyers have lived in Oakville for some 29 years and raised four children here, Jack had been very busy getting to be, and being, the boss at McCormick in Toronto and travelling extensively. He had no chance to get to know local business people and politiâ€" cians. He chuckled, "Of course, Ann didn‘t know me from a hole in the ground. The only Oakville people I knew were the ones I met at church." As it turned out, this was neither here nor there. The Mayor told Jack she had already enlisted Ger van Amersfoort, president of Smithâ€" Kline Beecham (who also enjoys being ‘the boss‘), to Chair the Festival. No problem, he said to the Mayor, or some such thing. After all, you don‘t get to the top by being petty and shortâ€"sighted. Meyers called up Van Amersfoort next and offered his assistance. "We talked for a while, and he invited me to be one of his vice chairs. We went from there," the executiveâ€"atâ€"large stated. Then, for his patience and good work, he won the honor and responsibility, and many hours of hard work which go The kitchen cabinet sale you‘ve been waiting for! During Canac‘s Annual Winter sale.
