"The decoration is a reminder of the values of service, individual respect, and community effort on which Canada was built and on which its qualiâ€" ty of life will always depend." This isn‘t the first award the Cadburys have received in recognition of their founding of the Planned Parenthood Association of Toronto and of spreading the message to Third World countries. In October, 1990, they received the Order of Canada â€" which Barbara ironically noted was presented by a Catholic prime minister â€" which followed other awards from the American Public Health Association and the YWCA of Metro Toronto. Although quick to point out that she is now 82, Barbara is also appreciative of the concrete recogâ€" nition of her work in the association, at the same time thankful that the government equally acknowledged George‘s work in Third World countries. Between 1960 and 1969, when the section was finally deleted, the Cadburys and their supporters worked on a shoestring budget, soliciting funding wherever they could for office supplies and other expenses. Besides submitting briefs to the government whenever the issue arose, they put together a list of hospitals dispensing birth control information and started a telephone line for people wanting information. Barbara made many radio and television appearances, challenging the status quo and arguâ€" ing for change. > After founding the Planned Parenthood Association of Toronto, Barbara melded it and three others into the Family Planning Federation In many instances, custom had considerably weakened it; whether there was a law against it or not, people bought condoms and birth control clinâ€" ics existed â€" even in Quebec.
