Although there hasn't been a substantial annual increase in these crimes, they continue to frustrate police and the public because the incidents seem senseless and often result in significant repair or replacement costs. Police statistics show that the majority of those crimes occur in Halton Hills and Milton between Friday and Sunday, during the late evening and early morning. Mischief crimes that result in property damage include graffiti, broken windows, vehicle damage, smashing mailboxes and breaking playground equipment. Vehicles are entered to obtain money, keys, wallets, purses, laptop computers and CDs. The dollar value of the property damage/mischief problem alone in north Halton over the last seven months exceeds $150,000. The settlement reached Monday will now be presented to the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) Local 1 Halton Health Programs and Halton Regional Council for ratification. Had an agreement not been reached, the nurses would have been in a legal strike position Tuesday (Aug 21). "We're pleased the parties were able to reach this tentative settlement and that our residents and businesses will continue to receive the high quality programs and services they've come to expect from Halton Region," said John Phelan, Halton's Acting Director Human Resources. Public health nurses provide a range of programs, from parental support for vulnerable families and flu vaccine inoculations to mental health and communicable diseases. They also provide travel health counseling and immunization, oversee sexual health clinics, injury prevention services for youths, adults and seniors, mental health counseling, referrals and ongoing support. Other services include outbreak protection and control for diseases such as tuberculosis, flu, hepatitis, HIV and meningitis.
