Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 23 Church celebrates 50th anniversary BRIAN DEXTER Special to The IFP Area residents are invited to help Georgetown Christian Reformed Church (GCRC) celebrate its 50th anniversary on the Victoria Day weekend. The church, on Trafalgar Rd., north of Maple Ave., has grown over the years into one of the largest congregations in Halton Hills. Citizens are welcome to attend three special anniversary events: The first is an open house reception and social on Saturday, May 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Georgetown District Christian School (next to the church). Then, in the church at 7.30 p.m. members and former members will tell of how they got to GCRC and how their Christian faith has impacted individual lives. On Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m. a special Thanksgiving service will be held in the church. At this service a collection will be taken for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee's efforts to help millions of children in Africa whose lives have been devastated by AIDS. Cathy VanderHeide, chair of deacons, has asked the congregation to make a special effort to contribute to this offering as the AIDS pandemic in Africa threatens to wipe out whole generations. She says: "We have been given so much. Let us in turn give generously." GCRC was founded by Dutch immigrants who came to Canada after the end of the Second World War and initially worshipped at a church in Brampton. In 1957 the Georgetown church charter was signed by 46 people but just five of those who signed remain at GCRC today while the congregation now has more than 600 members.
