Weather hampers downtown reconstruction CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Despite some setbacks due to snow and cold weather, work is proceeding on the Main St. reconstruction project in downtown Georgetown. Ron Goddard, manager of engineering design and capital works, updated Town council on the status of the project at last week's council meeting. One change has already been made with the erection of hydro poles on one side of the street-- to allow for the speedier demolition of the centre island (where the street lights are currently located). Aecon, the contractor, was expected to commence the demolition of the centre island and bump-outs last week so that the underground installations could begin this week (March 12-16), subject to weather conditions. Goddard said the weather has "caused us some grief, in the last week or so." The Town began the project midwinter so that it would be completed in time for the Georgetown Homecoming 2007 at the end of July. Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal commended Town staff for doing its utmost to minimize the disruption to businesses in the core. Childcare subsidies available to residents Halton Region is reminding residents the Province has introduced important changes to the eligibility process for childcare subsidies. Families that need help covering the cost of childcare will need to provide information about their income level based on their most recent income tax submission. The simplified approach will use the family's income to determine eligibility. Either an income tax notice of assessment or childcare tax benefit notice will need to be provided. Families with a net income of less than $20,000 per year can be eligible for full childcare subsidy. Families with a net income of $20,000 and more can be eligible for partial subsidies on a sliding scale. Parents, or those who know of a family who has difficulty paying the full cost of childcare, can contact Halton Region's childcare services at 905-825-6000 or visit www.halton.ca to access further information on income testing.
