Raiders slip to fifth place despite drubbing Derbys A light workload recently for the Georgetown Raiders saw the local club fall to fifth place in the North Division standings over the weekend despite the fact they extended their winning string to six games with a 9-3 trouncing of the visiting Streetsville Derbys Saturday. The Raiders are now a point behind the fourth-place Burlington Cougars in the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League standings, but do hold two games on hand on their likely first-round playoff opponent. Veteran winger Jeremy Whelan of Pickering was named as the first star in Saturday's victory after scoring two goals and inadvertently firing up his team early in the second period. With a Streetsville power play nearly killed off, a point shot hit an unsuspecting Whelan's skate in the slot and the puck bounced in behind goalie Keaton Hartigan to give the Derbys a shortlived 3-2 lead. The fluke goal seemed to spark Georgetown and the hosts put up seven unanswered goals-- going 3 for 5 on the power play-- en route to the win. Wade Finegan (2), Ryan Lee, George Lovatsis, newcomer Justin Wakewich, Kyle Schwende and Jonathan Quarrie contributed goals to the barrage. Limehouse resident Michael Kosziwka blasted in a power play marker for the Derbys and still leads the team with 26 goals and 28 assists in 40 games. The Raiders will play four games in six days beginning tonight (Wednesday) when they host the last-place Bramalea Blues at 8 p.m. Georgetown visits Bramalea Friday night and on Saturday the Milton IceHawks will be at the Alcott Arena for the fifth and final meeting involving the teams this season, with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. A road trip to Mississauga follows for the Raiders on Monday. Justin Wakewich (23) of the Georgetown Raiders pots his first goal with his new team in his home debut on Saturday night, a 9-3 triumph over the Streetsville Derbys and goaltender Dillon Branco. The 24-9-3-3 Raiders have won six straight OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League games and will host struggling Bramalea Wednesday at the Alcott Arena beginning at 8 p.m. Photo by Eamonn Maher Atoms win Silver Stick For the first time in recent memory of the International Silver Stick minor hockey competition, a Georgetown team skated away with the championship trophy, winning the Atom additional entry rep division at a tournament held in Pelham, Ont. this past weekend. Georgetown's Sports Unlimited Raiders were in a division with 13 other teams from across North America, easily winning their preliminary-round games before blanking Collingwood 8-0 in a quarter-final matchup. But the local Atoms had to be at their best to beat a team from Virginia 4-1 in the semis and then withstood a late Whitby charge to prevail 2-1 in the final. "The boys just really wanted it," said Raider head coach Murray Anderson. "They played so well defensively and when you score 39 goals and give up only six, that shows you a lot about the goaltending and the way the team plays defence. It was just a great experience all around from the pin exchange on Thursday to playing against teams from the States that they'd never seen before. "And we've got such a great group of parents, the team is just one big happy family." Preliminary round-- Georgetown 6, Pro women to hit ice Friday The National Women's Hockey League makes its return to Georgetown for a fifth year this Friday as the Brampton Thunder takes on the Oakville Ice in a regular season contest facing off at 7:30 p.m. It's a fund-raiser for the North Halton Twisters Girls' Hockey Association and admission is $5 per person. The Thunder won its first National Women's Hockey Championship in Nova Scotia last March under the guidance of coach and general manager Stephen Bennett along with his assistants, Gary McFadyen and Tim Lariviere, who are Georgetown residents. But the trio stepped down from the Brampton team in May after eight years behind the bench to pursue other interests and Bennett is now an assistant with Oakville. On the ice, the Thunder has a four-game win streak on the go and is led by the league's top scorer, Jayna Hefford, who has 33 points in 16 games, and fellow Canadian women's Olympic team gold medalist Vicky Sunohara. But unfortunately for local fans, both players will not be in the lineup Friday because they are in Calgary at a Team Canada training camp for the upcoming IIHF World Women's Hockey Championships. Prior to the game, a skills competition involving players from the Novice house league will take place, as well as a special recognition ceremony honouring the coaches who have been with the Twisters since the organization's founding 10 years ago. A silent auction will also be held and players from both teams will be available for autographs after the contest. The Georgetown Sports Unlimited Atom AE Raiders captured the tournament title at the International Silver Stick Finals in Pelham, Ont. with a 2-1 victory over the Whitby Wildcats in Sunday's championship game. team members (front, from left) are: Goalies Tyler Anderson, Joe Wallace.
