Jags still tops in girls' hockey Christ the King's Jaguars improved to 3-01 and are in first place in the Halton high school girls' hockey standings after a 4-2 victory over visiting White Oaks of Oakville earlier this week. Sonja Bradley earned the win in goal, making several excellent saves. Lana Munn, Kelsey Eady, Lauren Gilpin and Brittany Metcalfe supplied the goals for the Jaguars. In boys' action, CtK is now 5-1-1 in its inaugural season after a 4-2 win at Loyola on Tuesday, as Ben Merchant made 33 stops. Matt Wittman, Mac Doell, Marc Nadeau and Braden Artem scored for the Jags. Basketball The host Acton Bearcats pulled off a 4544 squeaker over Christ the King's Jaguars on Wednesday in a Halton senior boys' matchup. Seb Mena led the 3-2 Bearcats with 14 points, with Dan Witccak hitting 15 for the 2-3 Jags. In the junior game, CtK romped to a 5827 victory thanks in part to a dozen points by Adam Amato. Drew Backman responded with 14 points for Acton. Impact squad captures bronze The Georgetown Impact Black under-15 girls earned bronze medals in the top tier of the recent McGregor Cup club volleyball tournament in Ottawa. Finishing second in their preliminaryround pool, the Impact defeated the Ottawa Ravens in three sets and then the Aurora Storm 25-13, 25-17 before falling to South County. In the playoff round, Georgetown breezed past the National Capitals and knocked off the defending provincial champion Niagara Rapids in the quarter-finals, but the Durham Attack ended the Impact's run with a 25-17, 25-19 victory in the semis. The local side avenged the earlier loss to South County, prevailing 25-23, 25-19 for the bronze. Dunlop charity bonspiel raised $3,000 for groups In the Dec. 6 Independent & Free Press, a photo caption accompanying a picture from the Dunlop Insurance Charity Bonspiel at the North Halton Golf & Country Club's curling section contained an incorrect amount raised for the Georgetown Hospital and the Halton Hills United Way. The correct amount raised should have been $3,000. The Independent & Free Press regrets the error.
