YOU AND YOUR PET It takes two to Tango JUDITH KOLU Upper Credit Humane Society volunteer Tango is a very special young adult male Husky and like the tango, which is the dance of love, has so much to give to a family of his own. Meeting Tango is a pleasure. He is a handsome dude, the sweet face with one blue, one brown eye makes his gaze enchanting, and he is dressed in a beautiful thick orange tinged fur coat, and a big bushy tail reminiscent of a fox Tango is a gentle soul, greeting me with kisses on my hand, and wagging tail-- oh how he loves to be free of his indoor kennel or outdoor confinement. The delight in being able to exercise is evident and one of our special volunteers loves to take him for walks in the forest-- the delight he shows in doing "the husky wild thing" i.e. long, invigorating walks is heart-warming to see. All the scents and sounds of the forest are stimulating and yet, Tango will join you, contentedly sitting and contemplating the world around him, enjoying the hands on his fur and the love in your heart....oh how he longs for a family. Tango is easy to handle and walk on a lead, he loves people and children who are kind and want to interact pleasantly with him....he would make a great family dog. It must be remembered that Tango (like most huskies) has "wanderlust" in his soul, and it has to also be remembered that these dogs were bred to run, to feel the wind in their fur, to exercise those muscles, they have lots of energy. Tango is no exception but has learned to curb his enthusiasm and is willing to fit into family life with lots of opportunities for walks which allow him to burn off excess energy and gently ease into the life of a loving companion. As I leave I look back at Tango once again pac- Pet of the Month ing in the confines of his outdoor run, and I hope that someone comes soon who will join Tango in the dance of love. ··· We are still housing approximately 40+ kittens and three mother cats in existing foster homes as well as caring for our "regular" cat population at the shelter. There is an urgent need for a solid base of volunteer foster homes as kittens are being surrendered or rescued as fast as we can find people to adopt the existing ones. A foster family would be able to provide a separate room for the cat and kittens i.e. a spare room, mud room, washroom, in which the animals can be isolated away from other family pets. This ensures that the kittens are housed in a quiet environment, with low exposure to germs and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday family life. Foster families with older children or adult only households are best suited to this task. Food, litter pans, bowls, litter etc., and medical care, if needed, will be provided by the Upper Credit Humane Society as well as expert advice on each stage of care.
